Anyone want to DM this guy? He's a nice guy but this amount of thinking basically turns me off RPGs, making it a wargame for me right down to playing adversarial DM.
I meantioned somewhere here that I used to flip tables when playing Risk because I am not a good (sportman, skill) competitive gamer.
His point is easy enough: if I am not 100% on top of my game this Min-Maxer isn't going to enjoy the game. But it should not be unbalanced because he's asking to novelize his character. This is like a video game whereas RPGs are a bit more relaxed.
Well, I want to relax anyway.
Note I am not asking for advice on what to do. Believe me, I getting plenty of it. I am pointing out what is wrong with games when **CENSORED** cannot be groked.
He is not playing with me. He is anxious to play against me. I am already table flipping angry about that. This guy needs to read the AD&D 1e DMG, starting with the name: guide book.

No worries about not being evil. I can roll with a Ranger/Thief Elf as I also had a look at the ranger class and that seemed quite interesting in that edition.
I do have to give you some advise though as DM to DM about mixing systems...
You mention for example ascending as opposed to descending AC. That on its 'face' doesnt seem problematic. But remember you will need to go ahead and have to 'fix' every monster you throw at us in that respect... cause you cant use a 3.5 monster profile to deal with 1st edition characters.
As for the Basic Attack Bonus vs the tables by class...
Here is where it gets complicated. Indeed it sounds simple... replace the complex tables by class with the straightforward BAB.
BUT that is not as simple as it sounds...
BAB has an inherest rule about bad progression (wizard/sorceror)/ average progression (bard, rogue, cleric etc) and good progression (fighter, paladin, ranger, barbarian) while AD&D 1st has a unique table per class which some classes share. Now based on BAB you also get extra attacks (so anyone that reaches +6 BAB gets an additional attack!) while in AD&D as a balance for the constraints of the fighter he was the ONLY ONE (or in any case fighter/paladin/ranger) that could EVER have more than 1 attacks per round!
So in order to keep the balance you have to house rule that as well!
But again you also have the following issue... with the 'addition of AC' as opposed to a minimal reduction of AD&D1st you have a bigger discrepancy on actual hitting. That is because even a 12 on strength gives +1 to hit to everyone while an 18 gives a whooping +4... in AD&D an 18 strength gives +2 to hit which plays an important role when facing (low) AC monsters.
Hence again, need for house-ruling to keep the measure there... remember also that AC in 3.X is calculated as 10 + Whatever... so there is already an inherest difficulty to hitting! A first level fighter in 3.5 has +1 from level and lets say +3 for his 16 strength and if he has weapon focus ends up with +5 to hit an even an unarmored person ends up with AC 11-12 (from dexterity) meaning he hits around 33% of the time. But a 1st level fighter in AD&D has a much different table and has to go through a different table so the percentages change!
Again need for houseruling and complications. Especially consider how you have to also change the BAB, AC and stuff for monsters as much as for us!
That is why I am telling you that from my own experience while SMALL houserules might be okay, importing 1-2 rules from an edition SO different is wrong given how HUGE an impact it can have. And thats just a few examples from me that spent 1 hour reading the Players and not even the DMs guide! I imagine a whole host of 'issues' might come from it...
In the end its your choice off course and I am prepared to run with it now that I know what to expect
As for the character I have a name and basic idea of who he is... could you give some additional info on the setting so I can flesh him out? You mentioned something about sprites so I guess this isnt the previous campaign we were in!
