I wanted to create an NPC for my soon to launch Traveller campaign. This will be an early NPC the players will have the opportunity to ally or offend.
My concept was for an "old" character that has been around and as such he/she would have a lot of terms under their belt. I figured this was also a good way to learn the character generation process. It was in this process that I wrote my Traveller Character Generation flowchart (Available from the Traveller forum).
I started out as a Scout and made the role. I chose Exploration and made it 3 terms. Gained some skills, and made two enemies in 3 terms. The ejection came after an ambush and I failed an engineering role (at -3). He still mustered out with a Scout ship and 50K.
After that I decided the NPC would walk the other side of the law for a time, being bitter over his unfair dismissal and spent two terms as a pirate. After gaining a 3rd enemy who forced him out of Piracy my new NPC set his sights on Merchant. He decided there was money out there and he wanted it all. He mustered out here with over 100K and with a scoutship he has everything needed to get started
The merchant role of 5 was failed by 2 so into the draft he went as a Star Marine at the age of 38. At this point he started taking Anagathics and spent 4 terms as a Star Marine (he had a high End to start with). He walked away with souvenier armor and a TAS membership for his heroics under fire.
At 54 he was really ready to settle down into a life as a free trader. A 7 isn't so bad - unless you role a 6 . . .
A term as a drifter scavenger and I'll try again. At this point I am pretty invested in this NPC. He will be a merchant. He's been making his aging role well with only a couple points to buy back for 5Kea. He has plenty of cash.
After a term as a Scavenger with an increase on Jack of All Trades (to 2) he needs to role a 7. Easy Peasy - think Positive - you're journey will be over soon my pet! Unless you're rolling 6's. Second serving of Scavenger coming right up. You can't have any pudding unless you eat your beats!
Hang in there man - you'll get it next time!
This term in Drifter resulted in a ship share (another?) and an event that resulted in him forcibly drafted into the Navy!
Based on his current skills being in Piloting he decided to be a pilot. Two terms as a pilot with an honorable discharge, he now has a target of 8 to become a trader.
AN 8!!! HEGOTANEIGHT w00t!!!
I settled down to get a few terms of free trader in before settling him in as a successful merchant somewhere the PCs will start near to encounter.
In his first term he storked (2) his second survival role and then his free trading company went bankrupt on the Mishap table (6).
This NPC is fucking AWESOME!!!! He's going to be a 74 year old spacecraft parts scavenger (back to drifter) with his own space junkyard in some asteroid belt (he still had substantial personal savings). He'll be a cross between Dale Gribble from King of the Hill and Scooter from Borderlands 1 & 2! Even though he looks about 38 he has a whole lifetime of squashed dreams to be bitter about.
Also - he has an irrational hatred of free traders!
