Oooh along those lines, play up the "Occam's Razor" ideal. have them walk into a room affected by a deep darkness type spell above their level so they can't see in it, and have a mass Geas spell that gets triggered when they open the door. So they are forced to go in and go to a specific place, even though they can't see. When they are all in place, drop the darkness. Turns out they are in a "Weakest Link" style game show set up, with a razor sharp sword positioned directly over their head. If they move, another blade moves. Not theirs. The object being that they have to solve how to get away without anyone getting killed. The idea of "Occam's Razor" is that the simplest solution is usually the best. So make it something like the blades won't actually kill someone. They just move a bit when someone moves off of their location. Should keep them guessing for a while.
