The Bonds do have a mechanical effect in play. Whenever you make a Move to help someone, you add the number of Bonds you have with them to your die roll. So the more Bonds you have with a character, the better you know them, and the easier it is for you to help. Of course that means you could be a total Munchkin and fill in absolutely every Bond on your sheet to game the system. I doubt anyone here would do that though. Plus, you want to resolve your Bonds; complete them, fix the problem, or resolve the issue. When you do (and the other person agrees), you cross out the Bond, gain and XP and can write a new Bond (with any character) in it's place. That definitely sounds like a mechanic to encourage RP. I really like that about DW and will probably steal it for our other games. Its a nice grocery list reminder of how/why a PC would interact with other PC's. For a group that meets face to face every week such "subtle" reminders probably aren't as needed. But for my twice a month online games (or one offs for that matter) a pre-game list of who gets along with who/or doesn't and why; with a reward mechanic to boot for including these aspects in the game is a damn fine idea. Cheers.

But for my twice a month online games (or one offs for that matter) a pre-game list of who gets along with who/or doesn't and why; with a reward mechanic to boot for including these aspects in the game is a damn fine idea. Cheers. Two other games that come to mind with this same style PC connection, Spirit of the Century and Mongoose's Legend (formerly known as Runequest II.) SOTC is a free form story based method to have connections and Aspects with other PCs. But in it you write a blurb from an "adventure" you went on previously like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Then another player figures out how his character makes a cameo in your adventure and you do the same in a different story. Character creation is a session unto itself and is a very fun. Legend is simple a chart to roll on, similar now that I think of it to Mongoose's Traveller, the result gives some event in your character's past and you may choose to share the event with another PC. These events give a minor bonus to rolls. I would say time wise, Dungeon World probably is the median of complexity. With Sotc taking the longest and Legend obviously the fastest. I really like these background mechanics as they seem to be able to bridge a gap between thespians and power gamers. Suddenly the power gamer ends up with a little bit of story to his character and the actor gets a bonus with a purpose. And you never bother with that first time meeting nonsense.

The trick with questions in AW-based games is that they should intentionally be loaded. Whatever response the player gives you, it adds to the fiction. Like in that AP report I posted, I didn't ask the Fighter "Do you want revenge on the Snake Cult?" as he could've said "no". That gives me nothing to work with and is totally boring.
Instead I asked "Why do you want revenge on the Snake Cult?" Yeah, that can be sees as being railroady as I'm telling the player something about his character and some players might not like that. But the question is interesting. The player now has to think of an answer. There's a give and take with those kinds of questions though. The GM forces an answer from the player, but then the GM is expected to make that answer matter.
I actually kind of violated that "rule" during our session. I completely forgot that the Snake Cult had killed the Fighter's sister until the train ride home. If I had been on my game, I'd have asked the Fighter's player to describe his sister (including personal items) and then had one of the cultists wearing that item, or put it in one of the rooms.

All righty. Now that D.T.Pints has put his times into the scheduler I've nailed down three sessions of four hours and three players each. They are as follows: Session A - Sunday, December 30th from 10am to 2pm Session B - Wednesday, January 2nd from 10am to 2pm Session C - Sunday, January 6nd from 10am to 2pm - ericfromnj
- forresst
- scubasteve
All times and dates are Osaka time (so you guys will have to count backwards). I tried to organize the sessions as close as possible to when people responded saying they wanted in wherever possible. I never heard back from beerngaming, so we have a total of seven respondents. Not the best for an even split. ironnikki, your times were the hardest to juggle. If I put you with two or three other people, the remaining players didn't have a time that synched up. Someone got left out no matter how I tried to slice it if I gave everyone only a single session. So I just said fuck it and made a third session. jfever got the extra slot because he was the first person who was available when you were. How does that look to people?

I'm golden for Session B.
However I wont know about the Session C slot until probably that week.
So if there is someone who knows they can be there, the spot is yours.

Hey hyvemynd, just saw the thread now. I'd love to try out the system though, and as I'm between jobs, the time is no problem. Anyway, let me know if I can get in, and when it is. -Jesse

Hey scubasteve,
I gave you malifer's second spot in session C and updated the previous post. Glad to have you aboard. Check your PMs for a link to the Dungeon World character sheets. ;D

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to these games, too. ;D It'll be good practice for all those con games I'm planning to run next fall. I'm sure I'll start freaking out the night before the first game, as I get the sweats even when GMing for my usual group. I'm gotta come up with the adventure scenarios for you guys. Nothing like some lonely GM fun!

I am in for slot C. Forresst and scubasteve, you guys going to wait that day or do you have any idea what interests you in playing?
I am flexible and will work around whatever you guys want.

Will check my calendar and update once I get access to my computer again. Thanks!
ETA: Double checked my calendar (aka girlfriend,) and Session B will work fine for me. Sorry that my schedule was tricky; I've neglected to check the scheduling app after I added my times, and didn't realize that my times were clashing. See you guys then!

Book purchased.
Good for both dates. Already sent Hyvemynd that message, but I thought everyone else should know.
Gonna make a Dwarf Cleric. Decision made. Way excited.

Alright I'll see your dwarf cleric and raise you an elven bard...they should get along just fine right? After all I know all the Dwarven hymns! (Think pounding, gravely dirges about ancestry, daring exploits, smithing, mead and gold, interpreted by smooth jazz legend Kenny G!). Like I said most certain to get along like peas and carrots.

What's wrong with peas and carrots together? Everyone loves those frozen mixed vegetable packs, right? jfever can be the peas, D.T.Pints can be the carrots, and JiB'll be the corn. ;D As expected, the reality of running the first session in about 48 hours has finally set in. I'm doing the GM equivalent of silently running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Heh. Although it's not totally necessary, I've found it's much easier to play AW-based games when you have the physical playbook in front of you. That way you can circle/mark off your character choices, fill in Bonds, record equipment uses, and scribble down notes. Again, you don't have to. But I would recommend everyone print out their character sheet, spell list (if needed), and both the Basic and Special Moves sheets for easy reference. You can shrink the front and back of each sheet to fit on a single page without the text getting too small. The PDF is a little finicky to print. I found the best way to do it is to highlight the pages you want to print, and then use the "Print Pages" command.
