I was hesitant to post this, since I know it risks starting a flame war, but since there seem to be few WoD players here, it might be safe Which game is your favorite? I've heard many people say that old WoD, or Classic WoD as WW has started calling it, has a richer world, and that most people prefer those lines. I've only played nWoD, but I have had the chance to play several lines from it. Personally, I really enjoy Changeling and Mage. I haven't had the opportunity to play Geist, but I've had small encounters with the rest of the games. I like the Magic system in Mage, since it allows for very unique ways of presenting and solving problems, but the Changeling world is definitely my favorite.

Love the setting of the old Vampire the Masquerade, I ran a very long vampire campaign back then and a large portion of it in GURPS. Mechanically, I prefer the flow and feel nWoD, it's quicker, more balanced. If I had to make a wishlist; I like the old Vampire: The Masquerade setting, the new Werewolf: The Forsaken setting, the old Wraith: The Oblivion and Mage: The Ascension.
But if I absolutely have to choose one WW favorite game I would choose Dark Ages: Vampire (the first edition). I still love the rightness of this book on several matters plus we had some great campaigns with it.

I cut my teeth on the original Vampire game, and still love it. I hate Werewolf, but I think that's a personal issue involving my feelings about the mythology.
Mage is awesome, and one of the most creative ideas out there.
Wraith seemed silly to me, but others have spoken highly of it. I bought it, never played it.
Never played Changling, or even looked at it.
NOTE: This is all Old World. Never played New World.
But *favorite*? Yeah, it all goes back to the original Vampire. It was the first game I played when I got back into gaming (in 1991).

It's hard to pinpoint a favorite in the oWoD or the nWoD lines. As a storyteller i'm currently running a dark age vampire game and a mage the sorcerer crusade one. I'm playing in a nWoD requiem game set in the ancient egypt right now (800 BC).
in the classic WoD : i'd say Wraith and Orpheus are the favorites, followed closely by vampire and werewolf.
in the new WoD : absolute favorite is Prometheus, and i really don't like werewolf the forsaken, as most of what i liked about the old werewolf is gone.

Easily my favorite is the oWoD Demon The Fallen. I only wish that I had run a decent game of it.

The new Werewolf is definently an improvement. I am luke warm on vampire of both flavors but I have to agree with Ironnikki and Changling is alot my favorite. Both new and old are great, but I think the new changling:the Lost is my favorite of all time. We had alot of fun in Munts demon game, but it wasnt really the fun we were suppose to have.

oWoD Mage would have to be my favorite simply because it was the first game i ever ran (i know BIG mistake) but the idea of the game and seeing what different players did with the magic system was pretty groovy

I gotta go with Vampire: the Masquerade. I have read very little of the NWoD, so I can't comment on the mechanics, though I have heard very good things about it. What I have read in it was more of the fluff aspects, and I really don't like what they've done with the setting in Requiem. I have just this weekend downloaded the Translation Guide, giving tips on how to merge Masquerade and Requiem elements, haven't gotten a chance to read much into it.
I heard from my FLGS that WW is going to be putting out new source material for Classic WoD soon. I'm excited by that, but cautious.
I played some Dark Ages: Fae and a little Hunter: the Reckoning. With the former, I enjoyed the setting that the Storyteller ran it in, but the mechanics were a bit confusing to me at the time (I was still very new to pen & paper games in general, and Fae is very open ended, similar to Mage in that respect). With the latter, we only played 2 or 3 short sessions... barely enough to get into it, really.

Yeah, it sounds like WW is intending on revamping several of the classic games under the project title "Onyx Path." I'm unsure whether they're making changes and/or releasing new content for the classic games, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. This would probably be the best time for a newbie like me to try out the older stuff.

I was introduced to Vampire: the Requiem and the nWoD back in 2010 when my friend ran a six-month campaign. I absolutely fell in love with it, and snapped up as many nWoD setting books as I could get my hands on. I've now got Vampire, Changeling, Werewolf, and Mage.
I got Changeling on a whim (it was a toss up between that and Geist) and only started reading it first because my brother nabbed the Werewolf book from me. Now it's my favorite setting behind Vampire, and I ran a short campaign of it for my group. It's a great setting to read, but a hard setting to run. Especially when your players don't really buy into it.
nWoD has ruined me for all other systems, and I compare all social interaction mechanics with the ones in the nWoD system. I really like how social characters feel just as effective as combat-orientated ones, which is probably why I dislike Savage Worlds so much.

I've played most of the oWoD and nWoD games - mostly in live action, but also some tabletop (which is funny because I like them better in tabletop, but then sometimes one goes where the action is). I have more experience with the oWoD, but I think that's mostly a function of the way my available time has shrunk as I've aged. My favorite was Changeling: the Dreaming - I think it would have done much better if some of the really cool elements of its mythology (the Shadow Court, Inanimae, the Denizens, the Fomorians, etc) had been presented up front instead of scattered across several different books. I actually haven't had a chance to check out Changeling: the Lost yet, but I hear good things about it. In my opinion, when run properly, Changeling should be psychologically terrifying, and it looks like they may have gotten closer to that this time around. I also quite liked Vampire: the Dark Ages - it was one of the few games where they actually gave me practically everything I wanted to run it in the core book. I think I like Vampire: the Requiem a little bit better than Masquerade, mostly because the way it's organized socially, it's not as easy to be a selfish ass to everyone (both in game and - sometimes - out of game). Still, I did like the extensive pseudo-history that was there to draw from in Masquerade. I seem to enjoy both Mage games (Awakening and Ascension) equally, for different reasons. Same with Werewolf, and Geist and Wraith. I hear a new version of Mummy is coming out, which pleases me, since I liked the old one quite a bit. I've never played Promethean, but my Requiem PC's laboratory was once destroyed by a Frankenstein's Monster, which was pretty amusing. After the fact.

So one of my friends have been really wanting to run a Mage game and has been talking the system up for a while but of course I do not have the book. I value you're guys opinion on this system since and would like to know many of its pro's and con's before I go head deep into another system. Some have told me it works much like Exalted does with using the basic d10 system but past that I have a hard time getting more information about what it really works like. All I really know about it is that Mage's vary on they cast magic and manifest their powers, also it takes place in modern setting. To me it sounds Dresden-esk so please help mold my mind around this game.

In other words, is this old World of Darkness, or new World of Darkness? Because some of us can speak to one or the other, but not both.

I'm afraid I'm useless, then. My limited Mage experience was all in the old system. I read the Wikipedia stuff on the new game the other day, but that's it. I think your comparison to Dresden Files is applicable, but only in the truly broadest sense... basically, that they both shake out to be under the "Urban Fantasy" genre umbrella. The Wikipedia article has a *little* on the mechanics, so you may find that helpful as well. Mostly, just make your friend lend you the book.
