This was very cool. I've gotten interested in fate and this is a very helpful little document. Thanks Pete

Does anyone know any Fate Core/FAE actual play podcasts that might be helpful in learning to play Fate?

THX jeffry!!! I like the Atomic Robo comicbooks & bought the RPG as well, though i never really read it. When it comes to Fate i feel like i understand it in a way, but that i don´t really get it. Anyway, big thanks for the link, i´ll watch that as soon as possible.

I'm new to the boards, new to this thread, and new to FATE, though I backed the KS and have the hardcover. I really want to run it, but I am feeling weird about screwing things up so I'm hoping to listen to a few APs before subjecting players to anything. I saw "Of Steam Steel and Murder" mentioned above. Are there more recommendations for FATE AP podcasts?

Weirdly, I was just getting my college GURPS group back together. I suggested bolting a few FATE things onto GURPS, and they counter-proposed that we try running the whole thing in FATE CORE. Three of them had previously used the system, so hopefully they'll do some hand-holding while I come up to speed on it.
Wish me luck!

That's awesome! Good luck chronovore. I've back/read/bought a lot of Fate stuff, but still have yet to actually run a game. I'll be curious to know how things go for you.

I'm also an unfortunate victim of Unintentionally Purely Decorative Rulebooks Syndrome. And in the past few years, my PDF rulebook collection has also grown from a neatly trimmed Brazilian strip into a full-on '70s porn bush, and I'll have to include them as "decorative" as well. I recently started stuffing my tablet full of the PDFs though, which makes reading them more pleasant than a computer screen. Let me know if your FAE fantasy game that you mentioned on Twitter starts to shape up. Or we can collaborate over drinks again in April?

Collaborating over drinks sounds fantastic @chronovoe. I don't have anything ready for that FAE fantasy game other than a desire to play and those ten premade characters in another post.

Update: I ran my first Fate Core game for my old college crew last week. Literally, we knew each other in college, and now we are old – I'll be 50 this year.
Everything went swimmingly. Two of the players had GM'd Fate Core previously, so they're helping me learn the ropes. I'm still reading the book in fits-and-starts, but the first session went well.
I'm still working on when to award a Fate Point, and when to charge them. **looks around nervously**

Update, pt. DEUX: We had our second session on Friday, went better than the first, for two reasons:
1) We dove right into the player-driven action, whereas there were about 30 minutes of character completion at the outset of the first session. 2) The party received its job last session, asked the client a bunch of questions, so they were able to move directly into investigation.
2a) The GM knew just slightly more about FATE system this time, and I wasn't as shy about asking for rolls. 5) We had some fantastic character moments, I could see the players were enjoying getting into their characters, interacting with the world. H) I'm not sure if I have this "list" thing down.

It will come with time and practice much like any other system. I find that Fate has a little more of the element of, "getting my head around it," and it took 10-12 games playing it before it came together, and then I had to run it 5-6 times before running it made sense and I'm sure I still did most of it wrong.
Cheers,
JiB

We just finished another session. Feeling really good to be back in the GM seat, playing RPGs again.
I'm understanding a bit more about the malleability of the system. It's hard for me to get my head around the economy; telling the player, "You'll need a Fantastic (+6) result" and then they do their 4DF roll, plus the applicable Skill, AND THEN letting them spend a Fate to invoke an Aspect after-the-roll goes against the Hedge Your Bets mentality of every other game I've played.
It's also difficult to understand how to handle a roll where there are other hidden/secret Aspects in play. In this instance, the No Mere Hedge Wizard character has cast a compass to know in which direction in which the murderer is. The murderer is guarded magically against scrying, so do I want to put a negative on the Wizard's spell, or should I make it a contest against the scry-guarded target's magic?

I would say you could either do it as a set difficulty increased to reflect the presence of a spell already in place or do a contested roll and let the murderer have a free invoke of an aspect representing the spell.
