Gathering information for my doucheyDM article and just finished listening to his Narrative Control podcast where they talk about generating conflict that doesn't dissolve into a slugfest/shoot out.

What I am trying to wrap my ideas around is how to take lessons learned from AW games and put them into ALL my games. How to have PC vs PC conflict without it turning into a PvP bloodbath.
Our Monsterhearts game with Hyve still makes me wonder HOW it won't end that way ? My characters brother was stabbed in the face by another character (and it was AWESOME!). My gut reaction was to for my character to immediately drop into "I'm going to end you!" mode. But, that didn't happen. I think that what stopped this immediate reaction were three things: 1) It was the first game of a new group and I wanted to not be a dick :-D 2) I thought about the repercussions to my character by attempting murder in our school 3) I thought the possibility of a slow burn revenge so much more interesting to the fiction.
Now, I'll have to say that for many of my players such internal dialogue is often difficult to encourage. And the "You hurt me, now I'll hurt you" is so much stronger than "revenge being a dish best served cold." The challenge for me therefore is how to push this direction of play style with my characters...they have expressed a desire to step away from trope and cliche (as have I). But at the same time we are thoroughly enjoying Pathfinder and all its heroic fantasy. Having said that I'm cutting this short to go watch Iron Man 3.
Cheers,
Curt J.
