Totally new to Traveller, but I want to check it out. Which edition/version is the Neo of the lot? I read Stu's dissertation on T5...seems like a singularity to Rolemaster...I escaped that already.
Thoughts?

Mongoose.
(unless you're already a GURPS player, then you can use the SJG Traveller supplements).

Quick question: What are the main Traveller books one would want to buy?

Depends on what type of game you want to play - Imperium or Home brew? To be honest you can run a home brew just fine with the main traveller book. Aaron

Travellermap is really all you need in addition to the main book. Central Supply Catalogue is neat if you want more stuff to use/be inspired by when creating stuff for your own game. Anything beyond that is, imho, bonus - you can buy it if you really want it/think it's cool or interesting/want to support Mongoose/whatever, but you don't need it at all.

Technically I'd agree, but I do really like the extra careers provided in Agent and Scoundrel. Plus I like the fluff in a lot of the books. Also, if the party is going to be trading a lot I'd be tempted to either make up my own trimmed down rules for what's available, or use one of the spreadsheets kicking around for automatically creating a list of available cargo.
