But would a simple step back actually avoid contact, or just lessen the impact increasing the chances of deflection?

But would a simple step back actually avoid contact, or just lessen the impact increasing the chances of deflection? The velocity of a swung weapon (like a sword) is at it greatest at the outside of the swing arc, so stepping INTO someone is actually a much better idea if your opponent has a 'long' weapon (like a katana). If you step inside of arms reach you will likely render the blow completely impotent if you are well armoured. It will also be much easier to parry and attempt to hurt them back if you get closer where the swing-force is not as great. This also gets you close enough to touch their squishy, squishy soft parts.

That makes sense, but it still leaves me with the idea that dodging an incoming blow completely is a pretty iffy proposition.

Here's what I know: Late middle ages would have seen a lot of Lange Messer used by non-nobles, which basically look like this: and are used like this: Before any of that would be happening, circling around each other would be going on, but at this distance dodging is just not a thing once you're engaged. Note: lots of parrying, lots of counter-moves and hands used, and none of these techniques involve dodging. I believe if you were to try and dodge you'd lose position and shape instantly and that means even if you're able to parry the next attack, you're in no shape to counter. More likely you're just going to be wounded or dead. Nobody's just going to hop in and out of range. edit: the basic shape has them hold the free hand behind their back so as to not offer any target btw, so that's another obstacle to dodging.

Here's another nice one. I like how they're a bit more fluid in the demo than in a lot of other vids:
For some reason I've always enjoyed watching Florentine and long sword as well.

Yeah....I guess I keep coming back to the fact that the issue isn't so much that armor is taken into account in TN, but rather that weapons are not.
Seems to me that Weapon+Armor+Reflexes is what would define your ability to cause a swing to miss*
*By miss I mean not contact something soft and potentially damageable.

When I care about all of that - I play GURPS. Weapon skills and specialisations as detailed as you like, damage types by weapon, DR from armour, and selectable active defenses. When I could care less, give me my AC back.

I really wish this thread would be firebombed. From space. By Cthulhu. And the Death Star.

I'm not sure the thread could dodge...that seems a bit too unrealistic with all these naked swordsmen running amok.
