Follow a RL conversation with Lunarfeline I realised we often pontificate on making things better as a GM or as experienced Players. What nuggets of collective wisdom can we, the HJ Community, offer to make the transition into tabletop RPG's easier Aaron

Choose your roll-models carefully. Look for people having fun and laughing playing the game, not having fun by talking about how bad the other group over there doesn't know how to play.
No two groups do things the same. Do not get used to playing one way and then join another group and leave because they do not play correctly. Different GM's are going to have different ways of doing things, and that's ok. Homogeneity(built in dictionary saved my ass on that word) is for organized play, its ok if you love being able to have the same game every time you play no matter where you go, but understand most groups do not work like that. Some are going to ignore rules, some are going to change them to fit the group, and some are going to virtually play a completely different game than is written in the book.
Just ask yourself, "am I having fun?" and if you are, then don't get bothered too much about sticking to the rules.

A have a few pieces of advice:
1. Don't let a bad group or experience make you give up on RPG-ing. The first DM I had after I got back into the hobby after a 20 year hiatus was horrendous, and could easily have turned me off to RPG's completely (until I found this crazy bunch!). Just look around and find another group to play with. There are a lot of great people out there (and in here).
2. Try all sorts of games, even ones you don't think you'd like from first glance. I was strictly a dungeons and dragons type of girl at first, but I have had more fun playing other games than I ever thought possible.
3. Give online gaming a chance. Depending upon where you live, finding a group to game with locally can be difficult. Google+ has lots of different communities full of people who play regularly. You can also look around for online gaming conventions. They are a great way to find other players and try new games.
Edit:
4. Listen to some actual play podcasts. You get to learn a bit about the rules of a system, but you also get to earn about the basics of role playing. On top of that, they're usually pretty entertaining!

My advice for brand new players? Two words: Do something! And to expand on that a bit, don't look at your character sheet/folio/whatever to see what your character is allowed do. Turn that damn thing over and tell me, the GM/DM/MC/Keeper what you want your character to do.

I will second HyveMynd and say GET OUT THERE AND PLAY/RUN SOMETHING. However I will add a caveat. My first few games were with complete noobs, the wife, a neighbor we play board games with, and myself. It was fun and went well but wasn't AMAAAAZING. Once I got into a game with some more seasoned individuals who were more like-minded (NEEEERRRDS!!!) it was AFUCKINGMAAAAAZING!!. So by all means get your RPG on any way you can - but I HIGHLY recommend finding a local gaming club or online group where you can mix in with people who are more experienced. And listen to the backlog. The delicious, nutty backlog. Seasons 1 through 3 have a lot of noob centric topics that don't get much discussion nowadays in happy jacks land. EDIT:On that note - allow me to utilize the shameless plug for my upcoming Zelda game: Hyrule needs you!

I think you might be disappointed maxinstuff. I approach sex the same way I approach GMing, and everyone knows I like player driven games. "You expect me to do work? Screw that. You tell me what you want to happen." Now where's that derailed train image?

But, the final thing is that this should AGAIN be a show topic. Many of those lists created by Tappy, Stu, and Stork are FOUR years old and with all the new faces and SOCKS on the forum it might be nice to revisit some of those lists and see what the hosts think after diving back into the hobby several years later. Just a thought.

I agree with this 100%. I think it would be an excellent show topic.

First, I also agree that doing another show about "What makes a good player" would be a great idea. Second, you gave me another fantastic idea, D.T. Pints. Forget F.A.T.A.L... Who's in for a Monsterhearts LARP?

My advice for brand new players? Two words: Do something! This. I've heard "roleplaying is not a spectator sport" and I think that's sound advice. Sometimes I even struggle with that as a player myself, because I'm so used to sit back as a GM and watch my players. I think you might be disappointed maxinstuff. I approach sex the same way I approach GMing, and everyone knows I like player driven games. "You expect me to do work? Screw that. You tell me what you want to happen." It's scary in how many ways railroaded sex would be like a railroaded game...
