I saw on Twitter that the Something Awful forums is running an Apocalypse World Hack contest for August. I don't know any of the details because I refuse to shell out $10 to join a forum. Fuck that. Even if it is a one-time lifetime membership. Not gonna happen. I do have a few Apocalypse World hacks simmering in my brain, however. Most of them were translations. Porting over the material from nWoD Vampire: the Requiem and Changeling: the Lost to Monsterhearts. I've also got an idea for a hack about magical girls, like Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure. And of course there's the samurai game suggested by Forresst, Bushido World. The Clan/Family/School structure of L5R would make for great playbook/Move divisions. Anyone wanna help me?

It's super easy! You can actually find a lot of it to look at, or at least the player kits, for free!

I'd be interested in helping as well. I've been thinking about a Dark Sun Hack for a while, so a little hacking practice can't hurt.

Let's make Bushido World! Yay! For some reason I initially read that as "Burrito World". LOL. Forresst is right, maxinstuff. Most (if not all) of the * World-based games have their Playbooks (character sheets) and GM Reference Sheets available for free on their website. The Apocalypse World tri-fold playbooks are here. The Dungeon World Basic Moves and Character Sheets are here. The Monsterhearts Skin playbooks are here, and the Player/MC Reference Sheets are here. The Monster of the Week Hunter playbooks and Hunter/Keeper Reference Sheets can be downloaded from the author's website under the "Files" section, here. As each of those games include reference sheets, you actually could play them without the full rulebook. You'd be making up a lot of stuff of course, but your bastardized homebrew version would at least resemble the actual game. Plus, looking at those gives you a great idea of what * World Moves look like. I like both Bushido World and Dark Sun. My Dungeon World game for JackerCon 2013 was originally going to be Dark Sun guitarspider, but I ran out of time and just scrapped the idea. I'll make new threads for each so we don't get all tangled up here.

Oh man. Hyve, has anyone made Viking World, or Aztec World, or Native American World?
I may mostly be interested in Native American World because my mom's band sent me a whole little duotang of stories....

Saga of the Icelanders is pretty close to Viking Worlds. It's really interesting in that it has special moves for male and female characters to account for their roles in the sagas. On a side note, there is a horrible German rapper called Bushido, so can we please re-name Bushido World? Not that a *World game about horrible German rappers and their inane beefs couldn't work (much like Monsterhearts I guess), but that's what I'll be thinking of all the time if the name stays.

Well, if we do end up with Bushido World I'll just have to switch off the part of my brain that remembers horrible German rappers. One question I've been thinking about with regards to Dark Sun: I'm not sure if Apocalypse World or Dungeon World is a better base for that hack. DW will likely feel more like the AD&D version, but AW strikes me as very appropriate as well, given how apocalyptic Dark Sun is. Have you made up your mind about which one to use HyveMynd?

Mein name ist Bushido. Ich habe eine grosse schwarze dildo! Ja, Ja sehr grosse! (is that close ? because I think I just found my new Monsterhearts character) Awww yeah...I mean....Awwww Ja.... On the less brain damaging side of the topic, having not played Apocalypse World yet I'd be interested in seeing how the game would work with a Dark Sun hack. Would it make it feel more...well Apocalyptic ?

It's male, "der Dildo", so "ein großer schwarzer" ... otherwise not bad, missing some racial slurs, death threats against gay politicians, sexual braggery and such, but I believe we can do without I'm thinking a DS hack based on AW would pick up much more on the fiction of the setting, which is why I find it an attractive idea. Fictionally DS is not just standard mode D&D re-skinned, because it is set after a proper Apocalypse, but mechanically it of course isn't far away from standard D&D. So both DW and AW are perfectly viable options in my mind, it's more where you want to put the focus. Capitalize on the setting and concentrate on that or take the setting together with the more heroic mechanics, which is how DS would have played? AW is much more about your character's needs, scarceness, etc and how the world messes with your character. In DW you're supposed to be a group that works together on some level. Bonds set up potential conflicts, but they're the good kind, which connects you rather than pits you against other players. In AW, there are GM directions to have player-npc-player triangles that cause conflict and so on. It's much more "everyone for him/herself". The sex moves are kind of emblematic for that, they're about gaining leverage (or something else you want), maybe they're even transactions, but they're not about love. The Battlebabes' "The other character's sex move just doesn't happen" is an exception, but even that is just describing meaningless sex in a way, a character who can't engage even in what are supposed to be the most intimate moments. Mechanical bleakness really. Obviously this is kind of abstract, but that's the gist.

Mein name ist Bushido. Ich habe eine grosse schwarze dildo! Ja, Ja sehr grosse! (is that close ? because I think I just found my new Monsterhearts character) Awww yeah...I mean....Awwww Ja.... LMFAO. A) That sounds like a Rammstein song named "Pussy" (go look it up on Youtube), and B) I think Bushido is an awesome Monsterhearts character, D.T. Pints. I mean, look at him. He looks totally fucked up and broken. Perfect. Isn't L5R a mishmash of japanese, chinese and indian cultural and historical stuff?? It should be named 'LuckyBuddhaSeppuku World' If L5R is an equal mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian culture/history then Savage Worlds and D&D 4e are the best fucking RPGs ever. Seriously. I'm not an expert (or even a dabbler) in Chinese or Indian culture/history, but I don't see any of that in the Rokugan setting. L5R might as well be called "Japanogasm" as far as I'm concerned. I'm thinking a DS hack based on AW would pick up much more on the fiction of the setting, which is why I find it an attractive idea. You're right guitarspider. Both Apocalypse World and Dungeon World would work for a Dark Sun hack. I was leaning towards a hack of Dungeon World for a few reasons. First, to me, Dark Sun is still D&D and should play as such. Dungeon World captures that D&D feeling much better than Apocalypse World does, because that's what it was made to do. That's it's whole premise. Second, with that in mind, a lot of the framework is already in place. Dungeon World already has the framework for races and classes in place, and all that really needs to happen to turn it into Dark Sun is to modify or add to those existing elements.

Makes sense, especially using the D&D framework.
