Just wanted to give everyone in this sub-forum that there is a PC game for $20 on Steam in the Shadowrun universe. I guess it is the result of a kickstarter. Some good characters in there that you can use as NPCs. The game is good so far, but very linear.

Yeah, the included campaign is very linear and relatively short, 15-20 hours tops. They made the real draw the fact that the tools they made the game with are included so there is already a growing number of player made mission packs sprouting up. Haven't tried any of those so don't know the quality, but does mean there is some more longevity in the whole thing.

Seems to be very much in the style of baldurs gate and fallout.
I want it but dont really have time to play it at the moment....
It is set in 2150 if that makes a difference to anyone (it does to me).

I dislike the checkpoint saves, but the campaign is solid, and yes, very BG like with its text introductions to each "chapter". I'm hoping the dlcs will be better and I can't wait to see what the community comes up with.

See I love the checkpoint saves, many of the levels are running battles, so it ups the tension that you can't save every few minutes. I can understand where it might frustrate some though. There are already mods to allow you to save anywhere you want out there though.

I heard that argument and I see the merit, but personally I like games with perma-death (decisions suddenly matter, yay), so I wouldn't be save scamming anyway. Anyone who would is welcome to ruin their own experience. I just find it highly annoying that I can't quit the game when I want to without having to repeat 10 minutes that I've already seen. They could just have a one-save-per-game policy and save me the hassle. Also keep in mind that these checkpoints only work because the campaign is so completely linear. I sure hope the dlcs have more to offer in that regard.

There's a community project underway to port the entire SNES campaign over.

Timeline is very important to me. I don't play past the early 60s. I see this every day on steam and I want to buy it, but I barely have time to play anything right now, and I know it is going to be a lot cheaper in the next few months when I have the time/money to buy/play it.

Bought this - and have dropped about 4 or 5 hours in it now.
It is EXTREMELY linear, but very well written tactical RPG fare. There is no ability to wander around the sandbox - you are pretty much on rails from area to area and stuck in each area till you satisfy whatever objective that lets you proceed. This more than a little jarring for a game released in 2013.....
I really hope this is resolved with user generated content and hopefully official modules to. But what is there is very well written so far - I just don't see much replayability due to the extreme linearity. They haven't even attempted to present an illusion of freedom. Most problems do have multiple solutions, however so far I have found that this does not necessarily translate so well in a video game. I have often just stumbled into all 3 or 4 solutions to a problem (because I explore), often solving it before coming across the solution that suits my character better (decker).
The combat system is a two pip cover based system skinned almost identically to the new Xcom game (right down to the partial and full cover symbols).
There is of course a bit more going on 'under the hood' than Xcom as it uses shadowrun rules - but you will need to enjoy that type of tactical combat to get the most out of this (I do). it seems like the new 5th edition limits system is very much a feature here - with proficiencies being unable to exceed the base stat they relate to, and this applies all the way down the tree. I think the 'deepest' down skill is 3rd down the tree. It generally goes: > Base stat (e.g. Agility, Intelligence) > General skill (e.g. ranged weapons, Decking) > Specialisation (e.g. pistols, drone control)
I haven't dug into this too far yet but it seems to do a decent job at promoting specialisation early on - I'm not sure about later. Each additional point in a stat or skill costs more points, so you get quicker benefits spending points 'down the tree' buying up the lower levels of specialisation than 'across' the tree buying the general skills. Due to the limits system, after while it is going to become very expensive to continue to specialise, so there are some definite character development choices to be made here. How meaningful these choices are is yet to be seen.
Storywise, so far it is a well written murder mystery. The premise is that an old runner colleague has been killed, and a dead man's switch sends you a vid message about his insurance policy/last will and testament. Basically, the proceeds of his policy ($100,000 nuyen) are yours if you bring his murderer to justice. Obviously he saw it coming and wants you to be the instrument of his vengeance. I am likely nowhere near the reveal yet so I can't comment on how good of a mystery adventure it is overall - but that is the basic setup.

I backed the kickstarter and I feel like I got what I backed. I enjoyed the campaign as it was very well written and I wasn't looking for a sandbox experience. I am looking forward to two projects. 1: The reboot of the original SNES game. 2: the project where a whole lot of community people are incorporating all the material out there for SR4 (iirc) into one very long campaign. Keep an eye on the Steam Community Good things are coming.

I'd be more interested in a revived Sega Genesis port. Open World Sandbox Shadowrun? Yes please.

I backed the kickstarter as well and got what I wanted the sequel to the SNES game that was teased at the end 20 years ago. And it's pretty good.
As far as saving goes I prefer the method the old SNES game had. You have to run back through half the goddamn city to get to your apartment and take a nap. But they got rid of random encounters, so running all over the city would have wasted a lot of time.
Saving every level or on the fly has no I guess "tension", I find most modern games rather dull despite the pretty colors.
