Guerrilla war.
Inspired by Patrick Rothfuss' children's book that's not for kids, "The Princess and Mr. Wiffle," and by that picture that's always floating around with that teddy bear protecting the sleeping girl, I've decided to make the 2-3 session interim game I'm running between campaigns focus on the struggle between the things that go bump in the night and the faithful toys that protect their little person. I want it to be disturbing in a darkly comic sort of way, so there will be entrails of polyester stuffing strewn about and death all around.
I also need help with character ideas...so...
It's only a 2 person party, so I'll likely pregen 4 characters.
Right now I'm thinking of the teddy bear as the stoic champion, cynical and grimdark beyond compare. He's a hand-me-down toy, and he's seen it all in his defense of multiple generations of kids. I also want an over-the-top bloodthirsty assassin, but haven't decided which type of toy (baby doll?) is the most fun to wrap that in.
The security blanket will likely be a sentient magical item that the toys treat as a leader/diety.

This is awesome. My toy of choice was a black panther stuffed animal that almost looked like a real house cat when it was sitting alone on the bed. Might make a good sneaky, rogue type character.
I'd love to play this game

Oh, and the teddy bear is missing an eye, of course. I feel that's valuable enough info to warrant its own post.

I love this idea! My favorite toy when I was growing up was a homemade Raggedy Andy doll that someone gave my mom when she was pregnant with me. Of course when I was a little girl I wanted a girl doll, so I dressed my Andy in a Cabbage Patch kids dress and he has been Raggedy Ann ever since. I still have my transvestite doll, he/she is the only thing that I've kept all my life. As much as I still love my Raggedy doll, I think if I was running this game, he'd be my villain. After spending more than 30 years being forced to wear a dress (I lost his pants and shirt a few decades ago), I can see how he'd be out to get the one who did that to him...

You must listen to Podcastle's episode 254: Sundae if you're going to do a Teddy Bear Defender story. Hell, even if you aren't running the story, you should listen to it.

What about a toy with stockholm syndrome. The kid constantly abuses it but the toy still loves her. Maybe romantically. It should have several missing pieces/scars as a result of the young girl's 'affections'. Sometimes my mind is so fucked up I creep my own damn self out. Edit: HOLY SHIT moonday, this would combo with your tranny idea awesomely.....

Have you decided on a game system? The first thought in my head as I was reading this was how to adapt "Monsters and Other Childish Things" to be darker.
Also, I convinced my son when he was younger that his stuffed badger 'eats nightmares' so if he ever has one he should call Badger to come and eat it.

I'm imagining a cabbage patch doll modeled after Mr. Teatime from the Hogfather as your assassin. I mean look at that face, that is the face of a crazed killer.

[small, happy child voice] I will eat your heart I always wondered what that skrillex singer would look like ? Gah! Now I've got teddy bears, cabbage patch kids, and velveteen one eyed rabbits marching to this song! With LASERS! And as the room darkens and a single red spot shines down on this fucker...(oh the trailer ideas...) I can't believe some 80's marketing genius thought this would be the best way to sell a super creepy animatronic doll to kids... For added fun turn the volume down on the commercial and get Teddy's voice moving to the Skrillex voice. EPIC!

My favourite toys when I was a baby were my teddy bear Br and a little white cat my gramma knitted for me. I will dig around in my trunk, I think I still have them. I also have an old Oofie doll. That's the old mascot for the Montreal expos. My uncle gave me that. I feel like a stuffed cat would be a pretty good healer of some kind, and obviously a doll of a sports mascot? Totally a sorceror or bard, something high-charisma anyway.
