Well, hello again. Meet the Idle Red Hands for the second time. Even after two years, their stories on how they got started in gaming remain the same. From the drug-infested, Magic-playing ghettos of Philly to the cheese-eating, cheese-wearing wasteland of Wisconsin to the nuclear-fearing, sparkly-scarf-loving ground zero of West Germany, these three gamers found and fell in love with the hobby. Listen for the answers to these questions: Is Heroquest is an RPG? Who was the “inspiration” for the Punisher? How many stolen D&D products has Chris bought?

Hi I'm Josh in Orlando. I was once a part of your IR forums with the same malifer handle. But since only Hyve posted I could just as easily post here to chat with him. In regards to the episode I am afraid this might come off as Hyvemind lovefest, but here it goes. First having played Heroquest as an adult I can agree that it is a roleplaying game in the essence that it contains everything I did with the D&D Red Box when I was 10 years old. "Open Door, kill stuff, get loot" Second I think it is unfair to classify "Wayne" as the complainer, he typically has a reason as to why he doesn't like something, where as Lyal will in HoiserRob fashion just say Firefly sucks and carry on like nothing was said. Oh to balance this post out Savage Worlds is cooler than HEX.

Ha! Take that, Lyal. Though to be fair, we are coworkers. So by the time I complain about something on the show, Lyal's usually had to suffer through a few lunch breaks of me bashing something. Oh to balance this post out Savage Worlds is cooler than HEX. Aww man. And here I thought we were cool.

I didn't know that I needed to elaborate on why Firefly is average. The reasons are obvious, aren't they? However, I'll elaborate more in the future.

You don't have to elaborate, maybe working all day with Wayne is rubbing off on you and complaining just comes out on the podcast, but it does seem to be just as often. I'm actually more curious as to why you would argue Heroquest cannot be consider a roleplaying game? Is it the Minis? The Map? The pregen characters? leveling-up? Or is it that you don't get to pretend to be an wannabe emo kid that thinks Vampires are the coolest while rolling way too many dice or putting your arms up in the "I'm invisible" position. I hate WoD. I blame the Larpers I use to live with. That and Anne Rice style Vampires are really lame.

With Heroquest, you don't play a role; you control a token. It lacks the freedom of an TRPG. There's no game beyond the boundaries of the board. If you were to start by moving backwards out of the dungeon, you'd kind of kill the game.
I'm not saying that these kind of games can't be fun or act as introductions to TRPGs, though.
I prefer Dracula, True Blood and Near Dark to Ann Rice, but I respect what she added to the mythology.
With its own book, WoD is more than Vampire: The Requiem. It's a pretty flexible, straightforward system that you could use for many genres. It's probably my go-to system for modern games.
You know what's more emo than WoD? Living with "vampire" LARPers.

That sounds like most peoples early RPG experience. A flat boring character named Figh-Tor on a railroad adventure. I remember a game I played in once, the GM had a house rule called "God Bolts" whenever you did something the he didn't like or veered off the railroad tracks he would roll all his dice and you took that much damage. Pretty fucking lame. With Heroquest, you don't play a role; you control a token. It lacks the freedom of an TRPG. There's no game beyond the boundaries of the board. Yeah True Blood's no better than any of the other whiny ass Vampire bullshit, Twilight, Anne Rice, etc. I have heard positive things about Near Dark, but I have never seen it. I know lots of gamers love to roll lots of dice, but I have never met a Dice Pool system I could like. Every time I roll the dice I feel like I stop roleplaying so I can add up my yahtzee score. How many randomizers are necessary to figure out a resolution. The worst is when the system has so many dice in the dice pool it tells you to take the average of what the dice would have rolled instead of rolling an absurd amount of dice. Just average the whole fucking thing and make the game diceless. You know what's more emo than WoD? Living with "vampire" LARPers. "Who used my eyeliner? Look, it had my name on it. I'm not kidding, you guys. This is how pink eye gets spread." Damn Straight my brother! That's why I don't live with them anymore. A man has to have his space. No one else is allowed to use my leg razor. And if you want borrow my skirt you better ask first. On a more sad note, there is very little worse than coming home after a 10 hour shift just wanting a beer and a little "special alone time" than to find your house overrun with Vampire Larpers.

I'm not arguing that a lot of TRPGs aren't run pretty much like Heroquest; I just don't think that failing makes a board game a role-playing game. A lot of people really get into being the banker in Monopoly. It's still a board game.
What I like about WoD's dice pool system is that you can mix and match attributes, skills, merits, etc. It makes it easy to deal with situations not in the book or ones you can't be bothered to look up.
Do you like Cortex's system (e.g., Marvel Heroic RPG)? That uses a dice pool.
You haven't seen Near Dark? Not sure why you think you weigh in on vampire movies and books without having seen that.

You haven't seen Near Dark? Not sure why you think you weigh in on vampire movies and books without having seen that. Because I've seen Let the Right One In. I'm not arguing that a lot of TRPGs aren't run pretty much like Heroquest; I just don't think that failing makes a board game a role-playing game. A lot of people really get into being the banker in Monopoly. It's still a board game. Fair enough. I tend to think D&D 4e is more board game than rpg. But I don't recommend that either. Do you like Cortex's system (e.g., Marvel Heroic RPG)? That uses a dice pool. I started to look at Marvel Heroic and was turned off but the apparent suggestion you that should play one of their pre-gens and I'm just not all that into Superpower games. I'm always willing to check out and play a new system. I've had fun in games that use a dice pool, but it was never the dice mechanics that were enjoyable. I think the new Star Wars game is a really good example of why dice pools are just more clunky, than say Fate or an Apocalypse World Game. None of this build a pool, roll the pool, then figure out what the pool means. Roll 4df or 2d6 maybe add a plus 1 or 2. Done. Continue with the story.
