I've been playing and DMing D&D since 1982. It wasn't until I started listening to HJ that I realized: I was a totally self-absorbed douchebag at the table. It wasn't that I didn't care whether or not anyone else was having fun; in truth, for many years it didn't even occur to me to consider whether or not anyone else was enjoying the game. I was having fun, and that's as far as my thought processes went. Looking back at my old behavior, I'm probably guilty of being the source of a gaming nightmare or two (but no buttsecksing or rapey-ness, just the typical tame/lame shit). If it weren't for the HJ crew, I probably wouldn't have found the courage to ever run a convention game. And if you're gonna do it, do it big. Right? I've also opened my gaming horizons. I'm expanding my games beyond D&D or Pathfinder. Savage Worlds is the current favorite flavor of non-D&D, but I'm looking to add more. And soon.

Let's see, how has Happy Jacks changed me? I moved 2000 miles. Does that count?

Ya know, there was a time I hated your guts, jazzisblues ... Hated hearing you talk, hated the constant refrain of "Savage Worlds", hated that you were 'intruding' into the show. As a snippet of backstory, I was enrolled to go to school in Pasadena, but things came up and I had to stay here; I used to live in Newport Beach when I was in the games industry. So... Jealousy, pure and simple. I'm glad I realized it, and glad I put it behind me some time ago. Because - and I'm particularly noticing this as I plow through the backlog again (fifth time? I lose track. Yes, I have a boring job) that one of the best things about the show is the differing perspectives the second wave of hosts brought in - you, and tyler and cadave particularly. Not that I don't appreciate Stu and the gang (and miss Tappy), but fresh perspectives are always a good thing. Hell, I dunno why I'm even putting this here. Just something I wanted to get off my mind. Good on ya, jib.

I'm flattered and honored that Stu lets me hang out and yammer on about rpgs. Cheers, JiB

When I found HJ's, I was a new player and GM living in the realm of DnD4e and related pod casts. It's been wonderful, fast, (and to be honest incomplete) evolution from effectively high school level play since I found the show.
Now I have a semi regular (online) game with a fun group of folks I would never have met otherwise.

Without Happy Jacks, I never would have met the rest of my beloved C-Team. Those folks know how to game and they are some damn good friends.
I was having a very rough time during Nov-Dec in 2012. I got some really good advice from some Happy Jacks folks, JiB and Stephen in particular, that made a really shitty few months much more bearable.
With things I learned I GMd Call of Cthulhu for the first time.
The hosts laughter when I wrote in about my troubles with The Asshole Twins allowed me to make it through to the end of a campaign because we were already 85% done, but it also gave me the knowledge to leave a different campaign after 2 sessions when their promises of change didn't come to fruition.

I've been interested in this thread since it was posted, but I hadn't answered. I went back and checked just to make sure. Happy Jack's changed and helped me in some profound ways far beyond just gaming.
See, I found Happy Jacks when I was living in Quebec, surrounded at work by guys who hated everything about me all the time. My home life wasn't really much better. I wasn't surrounded by people who hated me, I was basically always alone. I was in a terrible place. Geographically, mentally, socially... yeah.
I started listening to Happy Jacks along with a bunch of other podcasts for one reason-- friendly voices speaking English. Along the way, I realized that I felt better after every episode. I relived my old gaming memories and laughed with stories I could see happening with the people I knew. I started thinking about maybe getting a game going-- at least over the internet if I couldn't find anything local.
Eventually, after some bad stuff, I left Quebec and came home to Alberta. I listened to 8 different episodes on that drive, which seems like more than it was since the drive home was 5 days long. Since then I've gotten my own gaming group (live! in person!) and a remote game too. And I have friends. And I'm not mocked for my accent. And I went back to school. And life isn't nearly perfect but man, it's so much better. I can't credit you guys for all those changes, but I can credit you for being the voice of comfort in those hard times that made it even a little bit easier to pass through the days.
Thanks.
