Hello everyone, I was wondering if there are any guides or references out there to help a new GM. Something that goes over things like preparation of major events, developing NPC’s, preparing random encounters, methods of tracking progress, what to expect when you encounter the unexpected etc... methods and practices that can be used in any game/system.

Never Unprepared is a great read and if you find yourself wanting more afterwards there's also 'Odyssey: The Complete Game Masters Guide to Campaign Management' by the same people.

Hamlet's Hit Points. Don't try to incorporate everything at once, just turn it around in your head a little. Being aware of the issues raised is a big thing already.

I know there are a number of Happy Jacks casts that are very specifically (and more or less coherently) geared toward the topic of how to GM for new GMs. Maybe we should make a list of them? I know they did a few very early on and I'm listening to the ones in Season 9 right now.

The whole Gnome Stew site is pretty much geared towards helping GM's. I started with their top 10 articles, and now I read it pretty regularly.

I'll second that the backlog is a trove of beginner oriented stuff. Go on - consume the backlog, you know you want to

I'm sorry, back log? Gnome Stew site?? I am lost. references to "the Backlog" are about earlier episodes of the HJ podcast. We're currently on season 11. Each season is 20 episodes. This topic has been touched on many times in different episodes. It's a very popular topic in different aspects. Gnome Stew is a blogging/publishing group that put out a number of useful titles. www.gnomestew.comCheers, JiB

Lots of good suggestions already. I'd add that the GM section of the FATE Core book is excellent.
