This is how you do edition rage, Internet: you don’t. In this episode, World of Darkness superfans Wayne and Lyal review The God-Machine Chronicle, which includes the World of Darkness rules update. Chris also claims to be a fan. Yet, he can never remember the rules, and when it comes time to record the episode, his daughter gets “sick”. This turned out to be a really long episode, so we broke it into two parts. This part covers most of the character rules. The “story” rules (e.g., combat) and the setting will be discussed in Part 2.

Currently listening. Pretty thorough.^^
I'm kind of wondering, I only ever played WoD oneshots, but if I wanted to get into running it, what should I get? nWod, nWod plus update, nWod plus one of the chronicles?

Very good question. We already have the new World of Darkness books and there is that slight restriction that Onyx Path can't completely replace that, similar to D&D 3's open license, so I'm tempted to say get the World of Darkness core book regardless of whether you're playing new World of Darkness or the update. That said, you could get the update for free and find free stuff to plug in the holes.
For Wayne (Hyvemynd) and I, the new World of Darkness is one of the best systems out there. (I think Chris has it up there, but not convincingly.) If you're just looking for a system to build your own games from, get the blue new World of Darkness book and the free pdf update. I'm glad I have the "new" core book, even though the update adds more to it. If you're interested in playing vampires or something, just wait until we review Blood and Smoke and make up your mind then. Not being coy; I just don't know what Wayne and Chris think of it yet.

I think it comes down to where you score on the rules-lite or rules-heavy scale. Wayne and I are more on the rules-lite end. I think Chris as well. The update adds rules. Overall, we like what they added, but they added them to areas that we didn't think needed extra rules. If you like more coverage in your rules, then get the update. If not, the "blue" book is fine.

Thanks, sounds like I'd be fine with the blue book. I'm not planning to run nWod soon (I just figured this was a good opportunity to ask, because I do want to run it eventually), so I'll have time to wait for your Blood and Smoke review as well.

It's a solid book. We used it for hard boiled, and I can't imagine using anything else for that.

As Lyal said, I honestly can't imagine using anything other than nWoD for a dark, gritty, morally grey modern game. It's great.

What did you guys mean about them not being able to publish an updated core book?
It sounds like it's ideal for a "NWoD Revised Edition".
8 / 10 would pay money for.

We suspect that Onyx path Publishing has some kind of agreement with White Wolf that prevents them from simply printing a new book that completely obsoletes the original NWoD core book. We're basing that on the fact that God-Machine Chronicles contains rules changes, rules updates, and errata, but it doesn't contain any unchanged rules from the NWoD blue book. Certain sections in God-Machine start by saying "These rules/this section replaces the rules/section found in the NWoD core book..." while other parts instruct you to "use the rules in the NWoD core book".
