I feel I should divide my answer into two parts.
My first experience with roleplaying (well, apart from the pretending every kid does - would that be LARPing?) was in 1979, when, while on a night-time car trip somewhere, my cousin played DM and ran my older brother and I through a dungeon. My brother played a knight and I was his squire, equipped with a dagger and some rope. None of us had ever actually played the D&D game, but apparently my cousin had heard of it, because that's what we called our diceless, mapless game.
My first actual experience with a published RPG rulesset was in 1984, I think. My friend's older brother ran an AD&D campaign regularly for him and another friend, and the day came when he invited me to play. I played a pre-gen Fighter named Clef. He was armed with a bill-guisarm. I got injured as our party fought a bunch of giant rats in a dungeon. Fortunately, earlier in our dungeon exploration we had encountered a party of clerics, so they began to perform a Heal Light Wounds spell on me. However, I felt that I could not allow my fellow adventurers to fight on alone, so I boldly (foolishly) rejoined the fray. And promptly got killed, to the clerics' (and the DM's) irritation. But I was hooked, and I learned a lot about being a good DM from those games that I still strive to emulate today.

Having watched D.T. Pints video I became curious as to when exactly I began my RPG obsession. It was on December 5, 2004 at a place called the Tower in Exeter NH. We played Dungeons and Dragons version 3.5. I was Aramil, an Elven Ranger. When that game broke up I went to my local brick and mortar called Myriad Games and asked the clerk to suggest something. He suggested GURPS version 3.0. I got the book home and started reading excitedly. To be truthful, I thought the game was way too complicated for me at that time. Ironically, I heard about a group playing Classic Traveller online. I say ironically because getting started in Classic Traveller is ,IMHO, way more complicated than GURPS. So, on January 20, 2007 I started playing Ambassador Dayson Brillet in GRiP (Generic Role playing for Internet Players) online with "Maladominus" as my GM. I started my own Classic Traveller campaign in Fantasy Grounds II on June 18, 2011. At the end of that, I started playing SLA Industries with "White Knight" as my GM on April 29, 2012 in EFnet. When that game broke up I started using Savage Worlds as my system of choice on Fantasy Grounds II. Usually "Mask of Winter" was my GM. I still keep in touch with him and we play occasionally. On May 4, 2013 I began my Savage Worlds campaign called, "The Salvage of the U.S.S. Kaine". About a year and a half ago I started going on the chat in the Fantasy Grounds site where I met "saithan" a moderator for the chat. He offered to run me through an intro game in GURPS version 4.0. I have been playing in his GURPS games ever since with two other players. I can state with absolute confidence that the role players with whom I have gamed so far are all outstanding and have a very deep love of the hobby. About the same time that I started my interest in GURPS I discovered the Happy Jacks Podcast! I have been playing in JiB's Fantasy Hero game Aescerlon since August 22, 2013. I GMed my first GURPS game on May 10, 2014. On May 11, 2014 I played in my first Champions game with Blackfoot on Fantasy Grounds II. On May 30, 2014 I played in Mask of Winters Trail of Cthulhu game using Gumshoe. On June 1, 2014 I played in Paul McCullen's Hero game , Millennium City Blues, on Roll20. September 13th, 2014 I played in Matt Manghi's L5R game. October 4th, 2014 I played in Jason's tabletop GURPS game. I am prepping my first Traveller Hero game. On Friday May 14th, 2017 I started playing in saithan's Shadowrun game. I am Akio Junichi, a street samurai.

For me it was 1979 or 1980. My older brother borrowed the old white box from his nerdier friend and we used pieces of paper to mark characters and he had me fight some goblins. We then formed our group (with the aforementioned nerdier friend) of mine and my brothers friends and we played Basic and then AD&D regularly for a few years.
My brother stopped playing years (decades?) ago, but I never stopped.

Somewhen in the middle 80's, my brother and I bought Mutant and Mutant 2 (swedish gamaworld inspired rpg) and started playing.
First time GM-ing I made a horrible adventure involving a fortress on tank treads that had fattened the players uncle's hotdog shop. It had walls that made all bullets ricochet (that is all I remember except the condescending laughter of my brother).
I gamed all of junior high all the time (mostly Drakar och Demoner - fantasy not D&D like swedish rpg).
After that I got kids and played less untill a few years ago when I started playing online.

I remember my first time. I was clumsy, and it was over too fast. I went to sleep right after.
It was D&D Basic and Expert sets mixed with AD&D stuff - my parents got me a bunch of stuff all at once, and I didn't know the difference... so I mixed it all together and took my friends to the Keep on the Borderlands.
We drew all over the included map.
I didn't know not to read the stuff outside the boxed text.

a heavily house ruled version of 2nd edition D&D with an extremely generous stat method (roll 2d6+6, total it, repeat 9 times, take best 6, repeat this process to generate 3 sets, choose preferred set, arrange as desired) in primary school drama class. just about everybody was rocking at least 3 scores of 18+, one of which was probably a 20. and for decades, i thought scores of 18+ were nothing special and a score of 14 was too low. our drama club wasn't even a proper drama club, it was merely a safe haven for primary schoolers to play RPGs without getting caught, though we had 1 reenactment or play a month to keep our funding. out of 1200 students on the entire campus, our club had 50 members we recruited. i started this in 1995. my first character was literally what basically amounted to an underage nymph multiclass assassin/illusionist without admitting it was an assassin/illusionist and without the character having to be evil or chaotic. she was neutral good i think.

My first game was a dnd 4th edention on one of those encounters. Really boring but not particularly bad. Done that for a few weeks before getting bored and giving up.

I had a Warforged Barbarian in my first campaign. He had an 8-track player in his chest with two 8-tracks. Long story short it made for a great distraction while the rogue robbed a bank. We were in high school and were just goofing off. Later on we all became much better gamers though I do miss that sweet 8-track. I think we also found a bottle of hemorrhoid cream and used it as an intimidation tactic once we figured out the monster attacking us had an intelligence score.

I'm guessing 1982. I was 8, my brother 6. We were at a friends house, he was probably about 3 years older, and had the red box / Basic D&D. I remember the two of us rolled up some 1st level characters, walking into a tomb, and were attacked by a bunch of skeletons. I remember columns. And there was a pit that we cleverly used to defend our backs as the skeletons swarmed over us. And then we died.
And we begged to play again, but he said "that's all for tonight."

1980 - one of my friends in the next grade approached me the carpark (where parents could collect their charges) and whispered "so, you like War of Ring, you interested in playing some Advanced DnD - we need a cleric?" Aaron

Some of the years quoted in this thread are a little intimidating, but here goes.....
2011 or 2012 i think?..... Savage Worlds (Rippers)....
Fuck you guys.
I played Baldur's Gate in the 90's though, and that's DnD so it totes counts.
