Let the Games begin! In this episode, we discuss how to run a game in a game. Sorry. I mean how to run a game in an RPG. Originally inspired by The Hunger Games, we decided to expand the idea so that this wasn't just an hour of grown men gushing about a book written for teenage girls (Team Peeta!). Therefore, we included such "all man" sources as The Running Man.

Gladiator games/hunger games/death race 2000 theme must be in the air. I put them in my desert Pathfinder game TWICE! One is an arena set atop a massive tower called the "Sky Spectacle" with roman style gonzo fights with mock naval battles/monsters/etc. but 1000 feet in the air...losers get the long ride down. I also resurrected the weird armor clad fiends from Beastmaster and called them Dread Hosts (there my Running Man hunters). Than not to avoid further use of the cliche I had my Dark Sun style running elves engage in an iditarod style death race across the plains with wolves as sled dogs. I love me some contests to the death! Then they showed up again as a prisoner arena in my friends game. (cue Star Trek fight music!)

Gladiatorial contests are just an awesome idea, as they can provide context to combat heavy games. Personally I'm not a fan of hack and slash games, where you're just a bunch of murder hobos wandering the land in search of interesting new people to stick your sword through.
But take those same characters and stick them in an arena where they have to murder each other to win, things become a lot more interesting. Suddenly you're fighting for a reason, which is infinitely more interesting than just being a murder hobo.
I should start throwing together that Cortex Plus Gladiator game idea we had...

I seem to recall an book I read a long time ago where the protagonist was a gladiator-at-law. That is, he fought duels professionally to prove his client's innocence in a trial by combat society. Can't remember the details, but would make a good premise for a game. Also there's an RPG called X-Crawl, which is about Dungeon-delving as a Reality-TV sport.
