Thought I'd open up a brainstorming thread - Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy in Traveller Step One: rip up the accepted Traveller Universe, we don't need it but we'll keep the pretty maps of the galaxy. Step Two: Starships - standard jump drives, improbability drive, bistomath drive Step Three: Where's my towel? what can make a towel mechanically useful and absolutely the must have item for our intrepid travel . . .sorry . . . hitchhikers? Flying - throw yourself at the ground, roll two dice, add stat bonuses/penalties, get less than 2 and you are flying.

In all seriousness, I wrote original rules for Hitch-hikers, called "Don't Panic" back when I was a teenager. It was based around an non-mathematical table called the Finite Probability Engine.

How's this: THE PANIC POOL. The GROUP starts with 42 PP tokens When a player shouts DON'T PANIC s/he removes a number of tokens based on the outcome desired Outcome costs and benefits (using prime numbers of course) suggested: 2 - nudge die result by +/- 1 5 - reroll dice 11 - seize narrative control MoT style 17 - invoke the improbability drive intercession. As the Infinite Improbability Drive touches all times and all space. Roll d66 and consult the table of improbable events (sort of a wand of wonder for traveller) PP points can regenerated through things like 'clever use of ones towel'. etc. Also replace the Social Standing stat with either Sassiness or Froodiness. Cause he's one cool frood who knows where his towel is at. Aaron

fail a roll? Don't Panic! nothing good happens, but you don't totally lose your head
clearly that's how it should work, isn't it?

Sometimes, what appears to be bad is actually good . . . and everything that appears good is always bad.Eg: being spaced by Vogons end up on The Heart of Gold, steal Hot Blacks sleek spaceship find yourself with controls set for the heart of a sun :/ Anyways - new skill to mull over: towel use. Need to edit character generation events table to give it a more Hitchhikers feel Aaron

I'd say any action being taken where dice are involved, if the player can think of a way the towel can help (including making up some aspect about the towel like infused nutrients) then they get a bonus to the roll. Kinda like using stunts in other systems.

Frood (as in Froodiness, or "he's one hip frood") replaces Social. I like the towel use from gandalftheplaid. The big one is introducing the logistics of 'The Guide' itself. I'm trying to hunt down a legendary pdf that is supposed to inhabit the internets - an actual draft of an actual HHGTTG RPG which was stamped 'official' until the Beeb fannied around with the licensing (again) prior to it being finalized and printed. Well I've got in a Blue folder here next to me.
Not really, but you persuaded me to dig out the one I wrote when was a kid. And you know what? It's pretty good! Very modern in a way, with just two stats, Ego and Activity, which work as stress tracks. Aspects (well not aspects but a "Partiality", and a "Hate"). Plus for the old school fans amongst us, Rolemaster style damage tables.

The actual one exists on a dead link, I only heard about it because someone with the dead link has been looking for anyone who kept the file for several years now. Rolemaster style tables . . . yeeeah, that tickles the OSR in me (in a nice way). I was thinking of having a look at the old Red Dwarf RPG . . . to source some ideas. Aaron
