I didn't mean to imply that the other players in that 4e game made choices based solely on mechanics. Two out of the three other players just had character concepts that worked within a single class; an Eladrin Swordmaster (Fighter) and a sneaky Halfling "thief" (Rogue). The third guy was a noob and just wanted to roll dice and hit stuff. He didn't RP, didn't build his character, and didn't seem that interested in even making choices for his PC.

As far as DnD3 goes, it doesn't provide roles for you like 4e does (controller, defender, striker.) That's not to say that certain classes don't do things better than others do, but I think there's slightly less pressure to round out a party by having one character in each role. When you get into higher level play, as usual, magic users tend to outshine melee guys, so having no access to magic can make things difficult, but there are so many different options to multiclass or take prestige classes that you can really take your character any way you'd like.
That being said, I've never played a real game of 4e, but I've heard that fulfilling each role during party formation is pretty integral. If that's not the case, disregard everything I've said in this post :-)
