Iron Maiden's Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner always grabbed me (and it was my first piece of vinyl back when I was 9. Both Steve Harris and Bruce Dickenson are well read men that like to use literature for inspiration. One thing that I didn't catch on to for years was that the song Still Life was based off of a Lovecraft story. The day that I found this out I listened to the song again and holy shit was my mind blown. What's even better is I played in a Call of Cthulu game run by Chris Cummings at Stratcon that had a similar vibe to it. Take a look in the pool and what do you see In the dark depths their faces beckoning me Can't you see them it's plain for all to see They were there oh I know you don't believe me.
Oh.....I've never felt so strange But.....I'm not going insane.
I've no doubt that you think I'm off of my head You don't say but it's in your eyes instead Hours I spend out just gazing into that pool Something draws me there I don't know what to do.www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ironmaiden/stilllife.htmlDamn if it's difficult enough to get this kind of eeriness across in a song, but it's really fucking hard to do with a bunch of seasoned gamers. Then there's Dance of the Dead that was based off the Ballad of Tam O' Shanter but set in the Florida swamps. Let me tell you a story to chill the bones About a thing that I saw One night wandering in the everglades I'd one drink but no more
I was rambling, enjoying the bright moonlight Gazing up at the stars Not aware of a presence so near to me Watching my every movewww.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ironmaiden/danceofdeath.htmlBoth of these songs make great NPC back story material. Ramblings of some random nutter, who's lost all of his SAN. I think the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner might be a great meta-setting for a game Tomes. Something that parallels the same journey...or just recast the whole thing to take place in space. Soemone goes and kills an Interstellar Albatross! Whatever the case, you've got to figure out how to fit 3 guitar solos in it.

Oddly enough thinking of Maiden I have sparingly used music to create stories (I tend to draw more from real world happenings for that stuff) but my LARP character has a damn soundtrack (with three Maiden songs on it...)/

Like this: INT. Dark Stadium - Monday Night Heavily distorted sustained Open E Chord shatters the silence of the full to capacity stadium of fanatics waving handcrafted signs with your name on them. LEMMY KILMISTER (VO) Time to play the game! The stage footlights on the stage in front of the thirty foot Trinitron slam wide open to reveal your backlit silhouette in all it's glandular glory. (if you don't see this link) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_0pTuYCJD0 I told a chum of mine that tried to get me into Dying Kingdoms that the only reason I don't LARP is that I'm simply waiting for the character I'm currently LARPing (irl) to die.

Along the lines of "the man in black" I took his rendition of Redemption Day and turned it into my Deadlands con game. It involves a train and a little town called Heavens Gate.
Such a great source of inspiration!

LOL! It's more like "music I listen to in the car while heading to the LARP"

Neal Peart of Rush and Jon Anderson of Yes are both huge science fiction and fantasy fans. They both have 30 years of song lyrics that show it.
Artist Roger Dean is the unofficial 6th band member of Yes. His artistic influence can be found throughout the RPG industry.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, never herd of him before and it sounds kind of awesome I was 13 when I bought it - halfway thru the books when I spied the cover in amongst a pile second hand records on a market stall . . . best 50c I ever spent. Hugely influenced my personal experience of the books having this eerie sound track with the evocative cover art. As a side note for any fellow Brisbanites with good memories - the market stall was at the last ever market held in the now demolished Cloud Land . . . Aaron
