I haven't gotten around to picking up 5E just yet (I intend to, just biding my time)and I just wanted to ask if the Realms did indeed become the default setting in the same way 4E used... Greyhawk I think it was?
And as well, has anyone heard any plans for a Realms campaign setting?

IIRC The Realms is the default 5e setting. However, PHB includes information on the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, and Dragonlance settings and pantheons. The core PHB is pretty setting neutral, other than mentioning Menzoberranzan in the drow explanation section. And no Kender/War Forged. Other than a few mentions here and there, the PHB is pretty setting agnostic.
I'm sure setting books are coming. Realms is to be expected. I'd be surprised if Eberron, Greyhawk and Dragonlance didn't get a book because of the info in the back of PHB. I'm holding out hope for a Dark Sun book.
And I think the main world for 4e was Ebberon

The PHB also mentions Mystara and hints at Planescape.

I think 5e is kind of doing the all inclusive thing, so we can more or less expect the big settings to get setting specific books.

I wouldn't hold your breath for Dragonlance. I'm pretty sure the rights for the setting have gone back to Weiss and Hickman, so it will all depend on the 5e license. The restrictive nature of the 4e license was the reason there wasn't a 4e Dragonlance. So, if WotC doesn't unbend enough this time, we might have a similar situation.

They list out all the Dragonlance gods in the 5e PHB. That'd be problematic if they didn't have the rights to them.

They also use the names of a couple of characters. But there are rights and then there are rights. Being allowed to reference them is a simple handshake sort of deal. "Hey, Margaret and Tracy... Can we mention your pantheon and a couple of characters? Here's the parts of the manuscript they're referenced in." There's no harm to the IP. Fully statting them out? Now, you're stepping on corporate toes. You've potentially made an product that they might choose to come out with irrelevant. That's gonna require a WHOLE different kinda contract.
EDIT: Also, please understand that I am not saying that you WILL NOT see a Dragonlance 5e book. Just that it's gonna depend on the 5e licensing scheme. WotC got pretty burned by the OGL, so we're unlikely to see anything that broad again. They burned themselves with the ultra-restrictive 4e license, so it's equally unlikely that we'll see anything that draconian. Where they fall between them is going to decide what we see come out of it.

I don't see how Dragonlance could possibly belong to Weis and Hickman; it seems to be pretty firmly within the grasp of the wotc overlords. Mearls mentioned at a convention last year that they were looking for some experts to revive Dragonlance. Hickman even submitted a proposal for a new trilogy. edit- Here is Hickman discussing Dragonlance rights, on his webpage. www.trhickman.com/qa-owns-dragonlance/

There was something about them during the 3e days. The 3e books were not done by WotC, but by Sovereign Press (which turned into MW Productions). And that they had gotten the rights to the world back...
Now, it's entirely possible that I misunderstood what the people (including Margaret herself) at the booth were saying.

The DMG has a section on creating custom races or realm-specific races and sub-races that weren't in the PHB; They use Aasimar and the Planar elf race whose name I can't remember as specific examples.
Meaning, any realm is within possibility and they have a guide for GMs to create Warforged and Kender and the like. Also guides for creating new backgrounds, archetype variants, classes, etc. etc. A friend of mine is working on updating the old Warcraft RPG to 5e rules from 3.5e.
