If it's a con game / one-shot, I always liked The Cube, since it's such a great example of getting a bunch of disparate, and yet related, people in the same fucked up situation... and each with hidden agendas or reasons either not to trust each other or reveal their secrets.

Anything by Dan Abnett, especially his Ravenor trilogy.

David Weber had a couple of good sci-fi series running right now. Honor Harrington and Safehold are both quite good, IMO.

I'm an avid reader of scifi and fantasy so you may not need this many suggestions but this right here is where all my character creation points went into, Skill[Suggest-Books].
Leviathan Wakes - James S.A.Corey [general scifi] - (Great science fiction, human based/solar system/non-FTL travel) A Great, classic story of a bunch of survivors caught up in machinations way above their pay grade. The Expanse Series is at 4 released books with a 5th incoming for the main series and 3 "novellas". I've read all the main stories and love every one, A thrilling story.
The Eisenhorn Trilogy - Dan Abnett [warhammer 40k] - A trilogy that follows the career of an Inquisitor of The Emperors Holy Inquisition as he travels the galaxy burning mutants, killing heretics, and purging the unclean. The real draw of the story is the main character Gregor Eisenhorn, the series can be summed up with a philosophy quote. "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you. ~Friedrich Nietzsche" P.S. I have read this series about 8 times over the years so far and I'm currently in my 9th read of it. My favorite. This series sets off the "Ravenor" trilogy as well which was mentioned above. Also, if you like Warhammer 40k I've read an overwhelming amount of the black library so just shoot away.
The Electric Church - Jeff Somers [general scifi] - Very grungy, grim-dark, noire-ish science fiction, very cyber-punk. The story follows "Avery Cates", an older man with a long life of being nothing but a hitman and thug. But in this life there ain't much more to it than that. Also a series, I actually started this one with the third book (The Eternal Prison) which was confusing at first but I still really enjoyed it, wicked fuckin good series. There are 5 books in the series and I regrettably haven't read the last one yet but they are all really good. The best parts? Action packed shootouts seemingly ripped right out of an action movie. (Not as scifi as others, no inter-planetary travel or anything, all on Earth from what I know.)
Wool - Hugh Howie [general scifi] - Everyone lives undeground in a repurposed missile silo, everyone. Good series, pretty short, read the whole set in 2 days. Much less action packed than the others I've suggested but written very well and the characters are well written enough to actually be invested a bit in them. Very good. More post apocalypse than scifi I guess tho. (Least scifi of the suggestions.)

Sean Williams - ASTROPOLIS Trilogy (with an extra, optional, novelette): His take on transhumanism, scientific advances based current understanding and predictions plus NO FTL travel . . . speed of light is the limit, no work arounds. Aaron

If your a fan of those books, check out Ravenor vs Eisonhorne, By the Light of The Immortal God Emperor of Mankind, the first book in the series had me literally squeeling like a fuckin tween girl. OH my god, so many characters, and all from the point of view from some rando-chick who doesn't know ANY of them. SO. GOOD.

Hmmm I was not super impressed by Pariah (the 1st of the EvsR trilogy) in fact... it felt a bit forced. I did like the idea of WHY they are fighting but I didnt find the book as great as the originals.

The actual writing in itself, wasn't the best, and the situations could have been more well written, I thought the book was mostly fan service, and I was ok with it (Why I don't suggest it to random people). My favorite parts were when you would get like a chapter or 2 describing a character and their actions, then you gotta guess who it could be. But when she's running up the stairs outa that church? Ugh, Word Bearers didn't know what hit them, wicked fun.
