I couldn't believe my ears when Stu led his players on yet another Bear Hunt - albeit a stuffed Teddy Bear this time around. The red herring even got topped off with a red bow, but no one got the hint. Un-frikkin'-belieble.

Well, they did fight a ghoul in the end, so maybe not a red herring. I really really wanted toy shop owner to be 100% innocent and have the party be dicks, but we'll see where it goes.

I think that Stu did the right thing with this herring of his; He most likely improvised the toy bear in the spur of the moment, responding to the player's questioning. Then, when they latched on to this bear - instead of making the players go in the opposite direction - he let there be a toy store next to the actual story location. Again Stu waited until the player's gave him something to hook on to - and had them go into the direction of the actual plot. Well played, douchbag DM! ;-) In summary: If the players choose a path you didn't expect - now the story is at the end of this new path. It'll be interesting to get the play-by-play at some later point, however.

Rather ironic to include Bears straight after listening to the 'Your Book is Why Daddy Drinks' episode about . . . A bear. (Other listeners will know exactly what I mean ) Aaron

For anyone who ISN'T a listener of both shows, he's talking about a recent book we read where the entire plot revolves around a lonely woman who fucks a bear. That shit won AWARDS. Come listen to us complain about it at whydaddydrinks.net

Honestly, I won't remember what was planned and what was improvised in more than a couple weeks.
I could start a thread about that (as long as the players promise not to read it).

Of course your players won't read it.

I for one would like to see a prep vs improv journal. I think it would be helpful for people looking to GM to see what gets prepped, and how that background, encounters, and plot points translate into actual game play.
