My instant thought was to have a chart of 1-10 for the party's wealth, whenever they obtain wealth they can go up a level, when they spend they go down. Assign a value of 1-10 based on rarity when they want to buy something, the difference would be the bonus or penalty to the roll, and the dc would be 5, 10, 15, or 20 plus your assigned rarity, depending on the likelihood that it's available. Leaving fiat for stuff you don't care if they get for free, or things you simply don't think they should have.
I don't know if I explained that well, I'm on a phone, but I love tooling around with stuff like this, and it would be a fun game-y way of dealing with the very game-y nature of loot in D&D.

The range would have to be bigger than 1-10 I would think unless you want to make food and board a fractions.
I've used a system similar to this in SW for a Zombie Apocalypse game and the players ammo. If they rolled a 1 they lost a unit of ammo (a unit being 1 clip worth), and if the rolled double ones they were out of ammo for that weapon type until they scavenged more.

In a fantasy game, I usually hand wave stuff like that anyway, but that would definitely be an option if you still wanted to track it, good call!
