I never heard which version of the game was being played in the Inukai campaign so I just wandered around eBay for a bit to see what I could find. The 4th edition books are available for a few hundred dollars but the 3rd edition books are available, as a set, for $40. I looked over the rules and compared the two and there's very little difference. I bought the 3rd edition and spent the savings on Wild Talents, Fate, Savage Worlds and still had money left over for the needed junk food. Kurt. You didn't look close enough. There are significant differences, and all of them make 4th better. Not entirely agreeable. 3rd has some better skill rank bonuses for many of the skills. 4e has plenty of skills that provide no mastery bonus until you get to rank 10. Wounds is a bit better in 4e, though it's basically just inverted from 3e.

I prefer the skills in 4th and the way iaijutsu works. I thought 3rd was getting a bit bloated, but there's no doubt it's still a good game. To each their own, really. On the original point, I think the core book is available on AEG's website, and I've found plenty of independent retailers with it. Isn't it on Amazon too?

I know not everyone gets all that deep into the shugenja rules, but there are huge differences there. They don't look that big in passing, but important elements like "keeping the spell slot with enough raises" changed entirely.
