That sounds awesome tomes I will pass that on. Another interesting observation at BBC: www.bigbadcon.com/game-quota-lifted-for-large-events/Basically: Large events (like LARPs) maybe shouldn't have that limitation / quota of registrations... so if this was something to be implemented, you might want it only on specific game registrations.

I think the only way it would work for me is if I could somehow schedule my game at the Strategicon site but have the location set to my room, but even if that were possible, I don't know my room number until Friday when I show up, and I imagine a lot of players would balk at that. You could just write the room number in on the sign up sheet Friday afternoon.

You could just write the room number in on the sign up sheet Friday afternoon. Oh, for sure, but I'd want to be "fair" -- if I pre-reg for a game, then show up at the con and only then discover it's in someone's room, I would feel annoyed, especially if I didn't know anyone else on the sign-up sheet (meaning, I probably would pass, meaning, I now have a four-hour empty block of time). I know most people wouldn't give a damn one way or the other, but I also don't think I'm the only one who thinks like that. I could try to fit it in the game description ("NOTE: This event will be played in the GM's hotel room. Underpants optional."). I don't know. Looking for an elegant solution, maybe, where only workarounds exist. This may also be a moot point entirely, since I tend to run Friday afternoon and Monday morning games. There are... not exactly an overabundance of open RPGs going on at those times, they tend to end up in their own rooms anyway.

YEARS ago, they used private rooms (that were cleaned out) for RPGs. I don't know if ALL the games were in private rooms, but the few games we ran back then were. It was nice, but it would also use up A LOT of room space on a weekend when the hotel is sold out.
With regards to playing in someone's private room, the potential for creepiness is very high. There would be a safety (and liability) issue with the game con if something bad happened. And whenever you get that many people in one place, a few of them are going to be creepy.
Were I running a con, I wouldn't allow sanctioned game to be played in private rooms at all.

Food: I'm not local, but Probie Tim's game makes me wonder about this solution: Food trucks. Might need to clear it with the hotel, though.

When we set games to "Unlimited" which LARPS usually are, there are no restrictions or quotas on a game pre-registration.

Food: I'm not local, but Probie Tim's game makes me wonder about this solution: Food trucks. Might need to clear it with the hotel, though. The Hotel already poo pooed that idea. Additionally, the area does not have any clear open parking that would serve well for a food truck area.

It was nice, but it would also use up A LOT of room space on a weekend when the hotel is sold out. Yeah, my first cons from back in the Northeast had small private rooms, one per game, and it was glorious. They weren't the guest rooms, though, they were like small meeting rooms -- table, chairs, bathroom. I just assumed that was how all cons were until I was dumped in the din of the 4- or 6-games (or more!) per room in later years. :: shudder :: It took me quite a long time to get back on the convention train for that very reason. I imagine it's like someone who plays, say, Bridge for many years with friends at home, and decides to go to an open tournament in a warehouse with 100 other tables (I'm assuming -- I've never been to a Bridge tournament or, now that I think of it, even know if they exist) instead of his quiet little living room. The price we pay for expanding our gaming circles and getting to meet other gamers. Were I running a con, I wouldn't allow sanctioned game to be played in private rooms at all. For that very reason we will not have games on our events list that are run outside of our allotted convention space. It's a liability issue. Well, that settles that then. Moving on...

You are free to come over to my house and play RPGs in my living room any time mook. We have had everyone from boardgames to RPGs wanting small private rooms for games, but for various reasons, it's just not a viable option. Jim

We have had everyone from boardgames to RPGs wanting small private rooms for games, but for various reasons, it's just not a viable option. I-- huh? I wasn't advocating for magically creating more rooms where none exist, sorry if that's what it sounded like (plus, as I said, it doesn't affect me very much since my slots tend to be on the schedule outliers anyway). I get it. I was just joining in on some waxing nostalgic. No need for the thread to start becoming a bummer. I was just thinking out loud about ways to run in private rooms, you (and Stu) pointed out that would never happen as part of the official track, bam -- fair enough, on to other things. Gateway 2015 was great, the cons before it were great, and I have every reason to believe the cons going forward will be great. Also, if you wake up one morning to find a strange GM in your living room setting up for a game, you've no one to blame but yourself. No takesies backsies.

I just think this all points to there being a need for a real world Jackercon...10 games, two days, too much beer, at Stu's house ? I'd fly in from Anchorage for that! I'd even help clean up...

I am sorry if I came off the wrong way mook that was not my intent. The intent behind my statement was and is that although undeniably ideal for the individual players, the concept of dozens of private rooms for games poses a financial, logistical and operational challenges that have a very low return on investment for the convention. These challenges magnify as our attendance grows. Simple statement of fact was all I wanted to convey. I apologize if I came off as defensive or harsh. Jim
