Re: Notes in games. Stu said something like he's not a fan of one player reading notes back they took as it colors the other player's memory of the game.
I agree that can happen if a few months have passed, or if one person missed the session entirely, but if it has only been 2-4 weeks, I would **hope** the players can remember things from their character's POV and not be swayed by someone else's notes.

1. Podcast (1 to 2 people and occasional guest) 3. General Session recording (may use for actual play?) What was #2 going to be? Anyhow, if you're planning on doing such recording, I heartily recommend Stu's Angry Folk Podcast on Podcasting. It's only six episodes, and they're brief compared to the HJRP shows, but there's a lot of good stuff in there. #2 has been added. Work related so I must have deleted it out of boredom. Thanks, I'll check those out. I've got a pile of books on podcasting and blogging I'm reading as well but those episodes will be valuable I'm sure.

I guess you could record sessions using G+ at a home with a laptop and an omnidirectional mic? EDIT: maybe Stu Venable could chime in a little bit about how the show gets streamed on G+ as opposed to the local recording? I assume all the gear is connected to the Laptop? Does G+ know whose mic is whose? When I'm recording the show, I have an audio out from my interface that includes the soundboard and the 4 mics in the studio as well as the music/announcer track. It doesn't include the audio IN from G+ Hangouts. This is called a mix minus. It's everything minus the audio G+ Hangouts sends me (which is the audio from anyone connecting remotely). This stops there from being a horrible time-delayed echo of people connecting remotely. This audio out goes in the audio input on a second computer that is running the hangout.(I also have a connector going from the audio out of the hangout computer to my audio interface so I can record the hangout audio on its own track.) Why 2 computers in the equation? ie: mic ----------- | |<---------------------| | | | soundboard -----|-----> mixing board --------> Computer <***> G+ | | | | \/ | mic ----------| monitor \/ Recording Aaron PS:diagram in the spirit of Old Skool 'puting (I remember when WORDPERFECT was King of the wordprocessors and there was thing called Lotus Notes)

In regards to notes in games, I highly recommend the players take them. With real life demands, etc, it's not always easy to remember exact details. But why not make them part of the game, just like map making? In my Sunday game, my fiancee plays a bookish character who writes details of people, places and other noteworthy items in her journal. So she's really roleplaying the character when she takes these notes when the party rests for the day or in between battles. It's been a great help to the group and is a one of the focal points of her character. When she tells the rest of the party about a certain detail or clue they missed, it's in character. As a GM, I'm all for recording for my own benefit as I don't have time to write down everything and I'm finding I forget names of NPCs or other details. Even more so if we've had a hiatus like we did when a player was recovering for several months from surgery.

PS:diagram in the spirit of Old Skool 'puting (I remember when WORDPERFECT was King of the wordprocessors and there was thing called Lotus Notes) And Lotus 123 was your go to when it came to spreadsheets. And a mouse was this new fangled gizmo. Why do I fell my comment should be read like Deckard Cain? "Stay a while and listen friend ..." Or maybe Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets?

Oh yes... I remember the golden magic of my first Word Perfect character sheet... all printed out on a dot-matrix. Gold. But specifically before WYSIWYG was a thing... just different colors (or shades of monochrome) which shows which text is in Bold, or Italics...

I liked the way later versions of WP would run a separate window across the bottom with all the codes revealed so you knew exactly why all your precious document formatting had been foo-barred by single change . . . . The whole process goes approximately like this: 1) Record the play session 2) Listen to the play session 3) Import the play session into Garage Band 4) Add music and voice overs at the start and end of the play session 5) Export to mp3 I use a XOOM H4N ( click me) The whole process of adding the music and voice overs and bouncing it to mp3 takes around 30 minutes, and I end up listening to each session twice in addition to when we originally played it. Helps to set what happened pretty firmly in my mind. Cheers, JiB

I'm a bit the same as Stu Venable in that I don't really feel a need for notes as I can usually remember what happened with a decent amount of clarity. The only stuff I write down is improvised NPC names, in-game dates, etc.

Wouldn't it be easier to mess with the recording on a computer?

Why would we want that For those who may actually not know, Garage Band is software on the Mac platform for recording stuff and doing pretty rudimentary sound mixing. It works pretty well for my purposes though there are actually better options available. JiB

As far as taking notes, I usually have my players take notes in character, journal style. Before each session, each person gives us the bullet point of version of not only what was important to their character from last time, but also how they felt about it. It colors the story quite a bit and refreshes everyone's mind while getting everyone a little more situated in their character. I found it shortens those first few moments of the game where everyone has to get comfortable in their characters skin.
My notes are usually pretty sparse, partly because my players are doing the heavy lifting of note taking, and partly because I'm a chronic over prepper so I usually just have to modify the dozens of pages I brought.
