Just announced to the world yesterday, there's a new convention coming to the Quad Cities (Iowa/Illinois border, for the non-locals). It'll be held at the Hotel Davenport (formerly the Clarion), if any out-of-towners are interested. I know little about it, aside from the fact that their website looks amazing. You can expect to see the Grindhouse and Fuzzy Heroes, since I'm gonna be there anyway...

I'll probably swing by for a day. Maybe more if I can convince some people to split a hotel room. Would be nice if all the people I've convinced to come to Gamicon can make it to GC Game Fest. We're rolling deep this year.

Kickass, man! And based on what I've already seen, this convention could turn into Something Big. The movers and shakers are a team of organized, dedicated gamers, and their hard work has already impressed me. I have high hopes for this one.

This has got to be for the best. I think it was apparent things weren't working out as they should with that other con.
I doubt I can make it as April is Child Abuse Awareness month so my BACA stuff is on overdrive, but it looks great. Hope everything goes well for D. and crew!

Post-con report: I actually first arrived Friday night during pre-convention prep, and spent an hour or two setting up everything for the Grindhouse Arena. There was a rather cool meet-'n-greet with our Guest of Honor, Paizo's Tonya Woolridge, that happened at and around my table while I was busily setting up my game. Pretty much all of the volunteers were also Pathfinder Society members ( very popular 'round here), and I got to listen in while she held a very informal Q&A session with them all. ---------------------------------------------------------- My games: Saturday: I didn't have to rush to get ready, so I had a nice, leisurely prep for the day's Grindhouse action. It was another good game, and 25 of the 77 pregenerated gladiators were chewed up in the arena. We got through 39 rounds of combat in 8 hours, and it was glorious. For the first time ever in the four years I've been running this event, we had a back-to-back winner. The same guy who won at this year's Gamicon in Iowa City took home the trophy in Davenport. My Dread game that evening went great, as usual - this was my fifth time running the same scenario I'd written, and it's still an absolute blast. Four of my six players hadn't ever played the system, but one was a Dread GM who'd never actually gotten to be a player before. They had a great time, and were impressive Jenga players - only one PC died en route to the finale. Much fun was had by all, and the leis were once again a big hit. (Side Note: In all seriousness, physical props are a huge bonus when running convention games. I cannot recommend them highly enough.)Sunday: My Fuzzy Heroes game didn't do all that well, but I think that was primarily because a couple of the kids didn't really want to be there and/or got bored really fast. The 4-hour session broke apart after only about an hour, but since this actually just gave my son and I more time to play games, it wasn't really a bad thing at all. We tried out several board and card games. He was looking forward to Pixel Tactics (which I thought was rather meh), but we both really liked Boss Monster enough that I went ahead and picked up a copy. We looked at possibly joining a Star Wars game but since it was full we jumped in on a game of Pitch Car and had a friggin' blast. That's probably going to get added to my own game collection at some point - everyone finger-flicks their "race car" disks around a totally modular race track. (This was WAY more fun than expected.) ---------------------------------------------------------- As for the convention itself, the turnout was wonderful. For a brand-new convention, I think we did better than expected - almost 250 attendees (and that number doesn't include staff or vendors). We had over 80 Play-To-Win board games given away over the course of the weekend - this was a huge hit - and I heard that almost all of the vendors had a great sales weekend too. Next year I'm hoping to see a few douchebags in the crowd!
