So. PbtA games. Seems like people are either totally down with them or won't touch them with a 10' pole. Why is that? Just looking to stir up some conversation.

GMs tend to be either improv GMs or prep GMs.
Actually they are usually somewhere in the middle, using the improv to try and make sure they can still use the prep.
It seems you have to be a GM that leans heavily on the imrpov side and that's tough to be without some actual practice at it, building that muscle memory.
Also the books are a tough read compared to other games. Savage Worlds was so easy to grok without having to play it with anyone. Dungeon World I had to skype a guy in Japan to understand what the fuck it was all about.

And damn this forum has been slow lately.
I even insulted people who fudge die rolls (which of course is not you guys since you can't fudge what you don't roll) and got nothing to show for it.

Yeah, the forums have been a bit slow lately. I blame my increased activity, because I tend to dampen conversations and also because I'm egotistical like that. I think you're right about the tendency for GMs to lean either towards improv or prep, and PbtA games will fight you if you go too prep heavy. A lot of the moves will force the GM to introduce new elements, and that can often throw monkey wrenches into the prep you've prepared. Case in point, that first Dungeon World game I ran with jfever and D.T. Pints over Skype. D.T. Pints's Bard asked one of the big bad's henchmen what they really wanted, and, as the rules demanded I answer honestly, I made something up on the spot. As the enemy was a bound soul, I figured it'd want to be set free. Little did I know D.T. Pints would just go "Great. Lead us to the big bad safely and we'll set you free". I just had to laugh as he and jfever waltzed right into the ice fortress without having to deal with any of the traps or other guardians. All that prep got thrown out the window. Or rather it would have been thrown out the window, had I bothered to do any. Heh.

Wow. These forums are either dead or that many people have blocked us...

I just don't have much to add to the conversation. The improv gene is hard, but can be learned, but it's not for everyone.
Then there are many that just like the basics of kill things, take their stuff.

I guess I'm in the middle, I've enjoyed what I've read and played in but don't feel like they're revolutionary or anything. To a large extent I suppose that's because my GM style already incorporated elements of what PbtA aims for, i just didn't feel the bed to codify it into a fixed document.

I like apocalypse derivatives! But everyone already knew that. I mean for god's sake, I call it Fungeon world.

I presume that you mean elsewhere, as the only divide I see here is between those who have already tried it, and those who have not yet been able to.

That's mostly true ayslyn. Though I felt there was at least one poster here who was... aggressively and intentionally misinterpreting what they'd heard about PbtA games.

Yeah and we also have posters who hang out in the D&D forums just to say how much the game sucks. I pay those people no mind other than to call them out.

On a side note I am excited that my gaming group will get exposure to PbtA thanks to Joecrak and World Wide Wrestling.

there was at least one poster here who was... aggressively and intentionally misinterpreting what they'd heard about PbtA games. Sheesh, man, I'm right here. And all I ever said was that I like rolling my dice as GM. Seriously, though, for a long time the "no GM dice rolling" thing made me crinkle my nose like I'd just gotten a huge whiff of dog shit. But at the last 'con I got to play in a PbtA game and saw how it worked. All of a sudden-like, it didn't smell quite so shitty and it had piqued my interest. I mean, hell, I'm even working on a character for some dude's Monsterhearts game. =/ Heh.

Wasn't you he was referring to. I suspect that I know who he is.
