Just watching (or rather listening to the twitch, while I write something) to the character generation session. And I wanted to shout to cadave, "yes me too!" paper character sheets and I never saw eye to eye, so I switched to fillable PDF wherever I could. The secret is to find the right PDF reader. Not all of them display character sheets well, for some inexplicable reason. I finally settled on PDF Expert.

I'm just too old timey that I want the sheets. Form fillables are nice, don't get me wrong, I just mostly use them to have a readable character sheet in front of me, not as an e-sheet.

I also noticed that they weren't rolling a skill in first term, only taking basic training. This seems correct after checking the book a bit more closely.... I always thought you got to roll in first term as well though (seems the only place it implies you shouldn't is the flow chart?)
EDIT: I found the roll20 sheets, even though they were designed for first edition, to be quite good. I prefer paper of form fillable PDF though.

There is also the question of Stu's character's progression into the Navy: since he didn't roll 2, in his graduation attempt, entry to the Navy should have been automatic.
He qualified anyway, so perhaps it's moot. However as he had already achieved all service skills at 0, there was little gained in this first term, other than being accepted in his chosen career.
Should Stu have selected from the Skills tables as if this was a second term? I'd probably say yes. But I can see an argument for saying this should only have been permitted if his graduation from the academy had been successful.
Has anyone seen a ruling on this?

tl;dr; Stu should have had a Skill Roll when first joining the Navy. To answer my own question. I think the problem comes from the flowchart on page 10 of the second addition, in particular: Which was reasonably interpreted by Dave to mean that if this is your first term you don't get to roll on a skill table. This is definitely not how things were done in previous versions of Traveller where one was able to roll on the skill table in addition to Basic Training. It's also backed up by the example character creation in 1ed. I've gone through the main text between the two versions, and there is nothing to suggest the 2ed is different than first in this regard. Unfortunately 2ed doesn't have the example creation to confirm this. So Stu's character should have automatically gained admission to the Navy, after the academy, not needed to complete Basic Training (as he already had all skills at 0) and then taken a Skill roll. But not roll for Commission.

Am I correct in assuming that this was only on the live feed. Has it not hit the podcast feed yet?

tl;dr; Stu should have had a Skill Roll when first joining the Navy. I thought you got a skill roll in the term you do basic as well, but I think I might be wrong there.... The flow chart is worded such that you should "otherwise" roll on a skill table if it's first term in that career, but on page 16 referenced in the chart, it doesn't say this. I might check and see if this has been dealt with on the Mongoose forums - surely it's been discussed. Should Stu have selected from the Skills tables as if this was a second term? Which makes a lot more sense if we assume you DO get a skill via a roll in the first term in addition to basic. Yeah, I have the 1e book and I definitely think that is colouring** my reading of this. I am inclined to agree...... **Fuck off red squiggly line
