So I am building a character for a potential campaign. The concept is that he is a traveling beer brewer. This means that at some point he will have to make beer. The DM for this game is inexperienced and I want to make it easy on him/help him out so my question basically is how would you handle something such as beer brewing in a campaign?

So I am building a character for a potential campaign. The concept is that he is a traveling beer brewer. This means that at some point he will have to make beer. The DM for this game is inexperienced and I want to make it easy on him/help him out so my question basically is how would you handle something such as beer brewing in a campaign? Having brewed beer myself, all it really takes is time and concentration. Ingredients are easy enough to come by, so the rest is boiling the stuff, cooling the stuff, putting yeast in the stuff, sealing the stuff, waiting. Mess-ups happen when you are not measuring right, you aren't clean, or you aren't paying attention. So I would simply do an Intelligence-based skill check to make sure you didn't mess up the batch and then let it sit for 2 months. In D&D, it'd be a proficiency in brewer's supplies using an Intelligence check. Since he's a traveling brewer, he'll need the carboys, casks, pots, and sanitizers with him--that'll require a wagon and mount. Really no way out of that. The alternative is that he brews at his brewery and then hauls last seasons brew with him to sell, while next season is fermenting. Also, for character flavor, don't forget to talk about beer a lot, the different types, the different yeasts, barley versus wheat, red versus a hoppy ale, why you never want to put an Abbey yeast in a porter, etc. etc.

Thanks I'm not really used to how much simpler 5e makes things sometimes. I got into that whole 3.5 victim mentality and doubt it anytime that my creativity isn't punished with tons of crunch and penalties.
The character himself brews in a custom carriage. He is extremely competitive with other brewers and uses spells like unseen servant, faerie fire, and prestidigitation to make his brews seem otherworldly. So I've left some room for him to get into trouble. It just seems like a fun concept and I don't want to ruin the DM's fun with my fun, I don't want to be That Guy.

Hah, that character sounds awesome I agree. I don't even like beer, but this still sounds as a fun character to play. :-)
