How much characterization do you guys put into pregens for con games? I'm working on some stuff for Jackercon right now, and thought back to my Jackercon Mage game and had some doubts. Just a couple lines? Animal forms (a la stork)? Add a line about how the character feels about/what backstory there is with each of the other PCs? Tabula Rasa down to having gender-neutral names, and let the players figure it out?

Just a couple lines? Animal forms (a la stork )? Add a line about how the character feels about/what backstory there is with each of the other PCs? Tabula Rasa down to having gender-neutral names, and let the players figure it out? I've found it takes a while to settle into a character from a blank slate. Given a one shot intrinsically lacks that time, you need to find a way to get engagement faster. I like leading/loaded questions. You can create a list of them and ask them to pick 1-3 to either answer themselves or have others answer for them. For example: - ______ is up to something suspicious, and I'll find out what.
- Who here has secret feelings about my character?
- I hate <insert NPC here> because ______.

I'm working on pre-gens for a 5e session now and have decided to put a lot of work into it and I think it'll add depth and texture. I even put in images of the characters, a special backstory, interesting quirks. Worth the effort I think.

You're not worried about the time it'll take to soak up all the characterization notes?

Just enough information to make the character awesome in the eyes of the player.
Grimm the dwarven fighter is not nearly as cool as Grimm of the Bloodstone Clan, exiled noble and killer of the white wyrm.
