What sort of questions do you ask to start off world building in Dungeon World? Do you do any prep for a one-shot?

Yeah! Some Dungeon World love! Please note that this is just how I do it. That doesn't mean it's the right way. As Dungeon World can easily be "bog standard fantasy", that's usually how I leave it. Especially for one shots. If things come up during play that are interesting or unique, or need clarification that's when I ask for additional information. Especially for a one-shot I feel it's important to get the characters and players into the action ASAP. I do ask questions about the adventure the characters are going on to get them invested. If the adventure has some necessary elements, like an established bad guy or magical item, I try to work them into the questions. Some questions I've asked are: - Fighter, name a villager. Why have you sworn to rescue this person from the Snake Cult?
- Cleric, in addition to giant snakes, what foul magics did the Snake Cultists use when you encountered them before?
- Ranger, what do the strange tracks you've been following to Whitespire Tower look like?
- Wizard, in addition to telepathy, what magical powers is the Helm of the Faceless rumored to possess?
- Thief, why is your patron unworthy of the artifact they've sent you to recover?
For one-shot prep, I usually cannibalize a D&D or DCC module. I've found DCC modules especially great for this purpose. You don't rewrite the adventure. You pull out the cool elements, stat them up for DW if necessary, and take notes on them. You should still leave a lot of blanks to be filled in during play. Maps are great, but don't get too attached to them. One of the early DW games I ran across Skype for some Jackers started to go badly because I tried to stick too closely to what the map looked like. I found myself saying "Well, there's nothing in this room that can cause them trouble" or "None of the monsters are in a position to hear anything." That caused the game to grind to a halt as I wasn't making GM moves. And if you don't make GM moves, the characters have nothing to react to meaning the players don't make moves, meaning the GM makes even less GM moves. It's a death spiral. I had to toss the map and just start making things up to save that game. Hopefully that helps. Oh! I have a DW adventure I wrote up if you're interested in seeing/using it.

HyveMynd That was something I was thinking about doing. Come up with something cool and use leading questions to tie in the players. I like the idea of no prep and wing it, but I haven't played with a couple of the players before and I don't want them to get a bad taste for the system if the improve goes wonky. With my normal group the trust is there to try again. I'd love to see the adventure you worked up.

I'd love to see the adventure you worked up. Here you go kurtpotts. This is a write up of the adventure I ran with D.T. Pints and jfever a few years back. I also ran it at a 2014 Strategicon and had jazzisblues and gina in my game. I'm in the process of making it better with the intent to turn it into a for sale product. It's a real barebones framework. Looking at it again, some of the questions are pretty weak, especially the ones about the Whitespire Knights and Nordmark becoming a ghost town. They don't really tie the characters to the adventure. I'd probably replace them with something like "Why have you sworn to defeat the Ice Witch?", "What legendary treasure is said to reside on the bottom level of Whitespire Tower?", or "Who were you closest to in Nordmark, and why do you fear they've been taken by the Ice Witch?"

No problem. If you end up running it, let me know how things went. DW adventures intentionally leave blanks, but I'd especially be interested in parts you felt were lacking or confusing.
