Grimgar: Of Fantasy & Ash. This anime is what a D&D adventuring style game could be. Really cool take on the genre. Every fantasy roleplayer should give it a watch. I was really impressed with how it handled the Trapped in Another World trope and played it straight. The psychological impact on the characters and the battle scenes were very gritty and realistic. Your points are spot on. One thing I thought was interesting was the human side of the monsters. From the moment we see that lone goblin filling his canteen on, you get a sense that they are more than XP or loot. The goblin leader that is playing chess, the kobald farms and foundries, and every monster that used tactics show us they aren't just brainless roughians. The fact that the treatment of enemy dead is discussed is super interesting, showing us a classic staple of war: are we really that different from our enemies. Fantastic show.

Nearly finished with Hap and Leonard, based on the Joe R. Lansdale series of books. I'd only known Lansdale as a horror author, so I'm surprised that this is more… bayou-weird-crime.

I finished s1; it's good, but the last episode doesn't wrap up as expected. It's done, and then there are about four places it could have finished, but it keeps going. There's a little sign off which reminds me of when they say "This isn't a movie!" in any given movie, which never works as irony, but worked a little for me here. Glad a s2 was greenlit; I'm looking forward to where it goes, as the two main actors are very good. Christina Hendricks was also impressive as a divisive character.

Finished Iron Fist, keeping up with Flash, Arrow and Supergirl. Started 13 Reasons Why last night. It's really dragging but I'm powering through. I am having a hard time finishing iron fist. I keep thinking someone else should show up that can make his/her whole body glow, Ala "The Last Dragon" Sho-Nuf!

I watched the first episode of Taboo the other night. I'm intrigued enough to see where it goes.

Works much better as Heroes for Hire, teamed up with Luke Cage. Seems like a waste not to cross them. Also, I liked parts of it. Madam Gao as always, and some of the others, though the final few episodes were a bit of a let down.

They are, its called The Defenders. Another Netflix show. Releases in August. Also, I watched the first season of Wynonna Earp on Netflix. Its... I dunno. I'd give it 3 stars. Its a decent story, but its also a little corny at times. Some of the acting isn't good. But it held my attention for 13 episodes. So there's that I guess.

I disagree - I highly recommend picking up Ed Brubaker's run on the title to see how Iron Fist can work on his own, he made the entire mythos amazing. AND he introduced Fat Cobra, one of the best Immortal Weapons if not *the* best.

Thanks! I meant more like the old comic book, straight-up: POWER MAN and IRON FIST as a series. I'd seen the teaser for The Defenders, and I'm cool with it, but it's also got DD and Jessica Jones. That's a different dynamic than what I want. We'll see, though! I'm hopeful about more Marvel TV series. Agents of SHIELD s3 finally came to Japan, and I'm going through it about six episodes a week right now. It's the best season so far. Surprising body count, though! There were characters that looked like they'd last a season or two, and BOOM, they're gone. It's almost like the writers' pit isn't seeing eye-to-eye.

God, SOOOOO disappointed by Iron Fist. I have loved every Netflix series until now, but Iron Fist was such a chore to watch. I simply had no sympathy with any of the characters. (Except Madam Gao, she was cool)
I was defending the series, before it's premier, from those complaining about cultural appropriation. Netflix had done such a good job converting the Blaxploitation era Power Man into Luke Cage (I think my favourite of all the shows so far), I was really excited to see how they'd deal with Danny Rand.
Turning him into a whining brat, who wants his Dad's business back was NOT the way to do it. It's a tenuous connection, but the short lived cop show Life (where Damien Lewis plays a framed cop who gets out of prison having become a Zen Buddhist) showed much better how to have fun with that approach. But I think it was the wrong approach anyhow - I really am not interested in another boardroom drama.
I found myself by the end agree with the "cultural appropriation" brigade, and wishing they'd made "Master of Kung Fu" instead.

I like the concept of Wynonna Earp, but it's one of those shows I can't watch more than an episode at a time and then I have to go to something else for a bit. I had that problem with Longmire. SOmething about it I like, but I can't binge it like other shows.
