Now that my infant daughter has come home, my time for in-person gaming is going to dry up real fast. But I really want to try out The Black Hack, a lightweight, OSR fantasy RPG. So I'm going to try and run a game of it on Discord. It will be text only, so a bit like a PbP game, but that would allow me to stealth respond while at work and in between bouts of baby crying and diaper changes. I've not run anything on Discord before, so this wouldn't be fancy. I'm looking for two to three more players who can commit to making two to three posts a day. Any takers? I've already given a spot to chronovore.

I know Probie Tim also said he was interested, leaving two open slots. I could run the game with fewer players, but four seems like a good number.

Sweet! Do you have a Discord ID? I'm HyveMynd#1997. I suppose we could discuss setting here as well. I'm thinking of pushing a bit more towards pulp sword & sorcery than high fantasy. Magic is kind of rare and those who use it are rather suspicious, humans are the dominant race and other beings are aberrations. Typical Hyborian Age Conan-inspired stuff. How does that sound to people?

Oooh. I'm of interest. I'll make a soft commitment (i.e. if you can use another, I'd totally give it a try... I'm also good with little chunks of time throughout the day, any day).

Got it, thanks. So that's four players tentatively; chronovore, Probie Tim, ayslyn, and tomes. Sweet. I'll set up the Discord server when I get home from work tonight and send out invites. I've got Chronovore and Ayslyn as friends on Discord, so when you get a chance, make an account and let me know your Discord ID Tim and Tomes. The system is pretty old skool. There are no races other than human and only four classes (Warrior, Thief, Cleric, and Conjurer) though I do have some supplements that add more classes and races if people really don't like those four. You roll 3d6 in order to generate your stats (rolling your next stat at 2d6+2 if your last score was 15+) and can then swap two scores after rolling. I suggest rolling stats first before deciding on what class you are. The basic mechanic is "roll under"; anything you do that could result in failure requires you to roll under the relevant stat on a d20. Hitting a foe with a sword? Roll under your STR. Casting a spell? Roll under you INT. Picking a lock? Roll under your DEX. Avoiding a guardsman's mace? Roll under STR. That's pretty much it. Some class features grant you advantage on certain types of tasks, allowing you to roll twice and use the result you want. I'll write up and share an SRD of sorts with class information and equipment. I am totally open to pushing the technology forward and using the optional rules for guns if people like that idea.

Well look at that. There is a free, text only version of The Black Hack available right here. I'm aiming to keep this light, so the only thing players need to read is the character creation rules, equipment list (Rolling Stats to Armor Proficiency sections), and the four classes and spell list (after the Magic Items section).

I have a Discord account for my WoW guild, once I get home tonight (sorry! I just saw this once I got to work!) I'll fire it up and get you the info.

No rush Probie Tim. It's nearly bedtime for me over here on this side if the world. Do people have a preference on including primitive guns or not? I'm good either way.

Do people have a preference on including primitive guns or not? I'm good either way. By primitive I'm assuming black powder, yes? In which case, I've always wanted to play in a black powder game. You roll 3d6 in order to generate your stats (rolling your next stat at 2d6+2 if your last score was 15+) and can then swap two scores after rolling. Hmm. I'm trying to think of a reason for this rule, and I'm having trouble. I mean... all it seems to do is insure that you don't have two high scores in a row, but it also makes sure that if you have a high score it's not immediately followed by an abysmally low score. I don't quite understand it. Well look at that. There is a free, text only version of The Black Hack available right here. Oh, quite excellent indeed.

I don't quite understand it. I'm not really sure. Two high scores in a row don't really matter, as you're allowed to swap two scores after you roll them. Maybe it has to do with levelling up? Each time you gain a level, you roll a d20 for each of your stats. If you roll over your current score, that stat goes up by one. Having a bunch of high stats means less chance on an increase, right? Or maybe having a bunch of high stats makes success too easy. As success requires players to roll under a certain stat, too many scores at 15+ makes success too likely. Perhaps. I'm not entirely sure. I'd like to run this as close to RAW as possible to get a feel for the game and how it works. That being said, if people absolutely hate that "2d6+2 for your next stat if the previous one was 15+" rule, I'll go over to 3d6 for everything. Also, if people are absolutely uninterested in those four classes, I have others. I'm definitely thinking black powder firearms Probie Tim.
