I agree the difference between frozen and reheated broccoli and fresh and lightly cooked broccoli is astounding. By and large I prefer crisp fresh vegetables just lightly sauteed. So much better than I grew up with. There are exceptions though. Like cabbage, potatoes, peas, asparagus, carrots, and collard (or mustard) greens. All of which I prefer fully cooked. My wife on the other hand... she'd rather everything be cooked to mush. Sigh. Fresh beetroot or carrots finely julienne sliced works even if they aren cooked. Apple can also be good in some salads. And pickled red onions are my latest obsession, perfect for fatty foods.

Oh yeah I do a lot of uncooked veg. To be honest that's my preferred for most things. I actually don't care for cooked carrots but if I do eat them they need to be fully cooked through

I like my salads in a bottle. Preferably consisting of hops and barley. Liquid salad for the win. I had more of the solid salad today... I am awaiting the weekend where I hit the bar that has 50 craft beers on tap...hrm I just realized we are missing a topic... Yeah. We just had a brewery open up within stumbling distance of my house. Soooo good. They make their own sourdough, too! It's right across the street from the War House, the Long Beach game store that's been mentioned on the show a few times. So game store and brewery nice and close!

So the buffet is done (I was on kid duty so it was hard to eat normally):
Some French fries, lots of small cakes, some meat and potatoes, ice-cream, strawberries some breed and cheese (gouda with spices) and a little fruit salad.
My 17 years old managed 5 large plates...

Tonights dinner was burgers. We made and grilled our own burgers with all the best toppings(onions, mushrooms, pickles, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and A1), and had brussels sprouts on the side.

He might have made it, if those mean old parents of his hadn't made him stop at 3/4 of a pizza...

Not sure if this should be posted here or in the guilty pleasures thread... Last night for dinner I had comfort food that my mother always made me as a kid. Something my grandpa made up and as white trashy as it is, its also really good. We always called them tater dogs. Here's the recipe:
A batch of your favorite mashed potatoes, not too creamy they have to be fairly thick. A package of your favorite hot dogs(I use all beef but I assume you could use other sausages) Cheese(we used american as a kid but I tend to use smoked cheddar or something now) Mustard(as a kid we used regular yellow mustard but I use deli style now)
So you start by making the potatoes, obviously. Then you butterfly the hot dogs, slicing them down the middle about 98% of the way and then flattening them out. Put the hot dogs on a baking sheet and under the broiler for about 3-5 minutes depending on how hot your broiler is, then take them out. Put a little mustard down the middle of each hot dog, and then top with a mound of mashed potatoes (divided evenly among the hotdogs) down the length of the dog. Then top that with cheese and then broil again until the cheese browns on top.
Thats all there is to it, and it sounds so crazy but it really is good. The first time I mentioned it to my wife she thought I was off my rocker, but then I made them and now she requests them on occasion. Not something we have very often at all, maybe once every 3-4 months. Obviously its not very healthy but I try to make it better by using nonfat sour cream in the potatoes instead of milk and butter, I use a better grade of hot dog, a better kind of cheese, etc. As a kid, this was all we had as a dinner but now I make a vegetable to go with them. Last night we had a salad on the side. One of the only things my mother used to make that I've kept without changing it a lot. For example, I rarely fry things, and she fried damn near everything. Fried pork chops, fried fish, fried chicken, etc.

My mom's the bomb at homemade lasagna (my favorite) and from-scratch chili (my wife's favorite). We only get to have the lasagna on special occasions, thankfully for my waistline, but she'll regularly make up a big-ass pot of chili for our family's every-Sunday lunches.

My mom used to (and still does sometimes, especially if she knows I'm coming over) bake braided bread. 3 types of bread dough braided together and baked (usually white, wheat, and squaw). Soooo tasty.
Last night my wife tried a new seitan recipe to simulate pastrami and we had reuben-esque sandwiches (saurkraut, mustard, sauce). They were REALLY damn good. The seitan came out a bit too sweet and was closer to a honey ham, but the texture was spot on. She'll tweak it in the future to get something closer to pastrami.
