So, player secrets vs. character secrets... We discussed a situation that developed in our Blood, Blade & Tusk game (BBT03), when things started heating up for a character, and had a lengthier conversation with most of the players on HJRP1919.
One of the characters, Adeste, has a secret, as we're sure most of the characters do; but in this case, we kept the secret from the players, as well. We've been playing the secret "off camera" via Slacked notes and, in the recent session, with a sidebar.
Oh mighty forum, what are your thoughts? Please vote in the poll. :)

Since we don't know the secret it's hard to know if it would be better for us the audience to know or not.
Just remember that it is a show for the listeners and use that as a deciding factor.
And personality I think It's anoying not to know what messages are being sent in secret to the GM.

The audience knows the secret, Stu had the other players leave the room while he ran Gina solo.

I'm with Stu on this topic, especially when it comes to big PC secrets. I want to be surprised when my character is. As long as the GM and player can take care of it with few interruptions to the other players, it's gold. The occasional sidebar is fine, as well as notes to/from the GM.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the AP yet, but I did listen to Friday's show. I think that as long as the GM is in on the "secret" that it should definitely be kept from the other players. If they, in character, can find something strange and go investigating then yeah they should know. Outside of that, absolutely not. I end to err on the side of no secrets though, because I don't like doing sidebars. If everything can be handled outside of game night though, then sure. Text me or whatever in game so I know what you're doing but we'll actually roleplay it out separate from game night so I don't split attention from the main group.

I agree that anything that can be handled "offline" should be handled offline. This event needed to be a sidebar, though (or needed to happen, if one is of the opinion that it shouldn't have been a secret to the players), as the results had a direct impact on the game. And I tell you, there were a few surprises for the audience, and I thought it was great.

As a listener, it is great to be in on the secret and listen to the other players express their suspicions. Jason's point that what he thinks is different from what his character thinks was interesting. Anyway, I side with trying to keep player knowledge as close to character knowledge as possible, but at the least secrets make good radio!
