Conversely this is the first friday night show that I tuned out from in boredom after the first 30-40minutes. I'm going to attempt to power through it to maintain my 100% listened ratio, but it just wasn't that interesting to me and I've larp'd.

Yeah, I couldn't do it either. But I don't LARP so that's not the show's fault for branching out into other parts of the community.

Oh Jesus Christ. An L5R LARP? Where people walk around in kimonos carrying katanas? Let me go slice my gut open with my wakizaashi. It's not terrible, at least it wasn't the time I played at Gencon. If I'd been bolder, I'd have picked the Crane Champion Doji Kuwanan but I wimped out. Katanas and weapons are generally out at the organized stuff because its court - no sensible person holding court allows anyone other than their own people weapons.

Truth be told I was just excited to hear about LARPs even if it was mostly about Vampire which I have only done sporadically.
running LARPs I think can improve your ability at being a tabletop DM and vice versa. That would be something interesting to talk about because it would apply more to the majority which is tabletop GMs.

Love hearing conversation about LARPs. For the record LARPs have been around since the 70s though I am unsure when the actual term LARP came into being though I suspect the 80s at the latest. Not sure when the "LARP" term came to be codified, but look no further than Pasadena's own Coventry group (pre-D&D?!!!) to see live action role playing and how that immersive role came to be. Very curious and very interesting as this group started before Dungeons and Dragons came out in 1974. I'd highly recommend Jon Peterson's Playing at the World book for further information. That book is hands down very in depth and well researched for all common gaming threads leading into what we all know now as our modern day RPG be it D&D or one of its many offshoots resulting in our own wealth of games to play. The LARP aspect seems particularly relevant relating to what I read of Coventry.

Out of interest Peter Duncan, who tragically died in the Real live dungeon adventure above, was also killed by Pierce Brosnan's Prince Barrin: Timothy Dalton, I think you'll find. Dalton was my favorite Bond until Daniel Craig showed up. Moore's cheesiness doesn't hold up, and Moore's casual misogyny grates, and Brosnan's smarm can only carry him so far. Dalton was smooth, cruel when needed, but a comforting protector when it was called for. …I have apparently put way too much thought into this. Oh Jesus Christ. An L5R LARP? Where people walk around in kimonos carrying katanas? Let me go slice my gut open with my wakizaashi. You're just disgusted that people would go out of their way to recreate what we have to deal with during daily commutes: kimono, honor besmirchings, and casual disembowelment.

I deal with that stuff on a daily basis. Why would I want to go to a game con and see even MORE of it?

FWIW, I wasn't enrapt by the LARP stuff, but I'm one of the curmudgeonly types that still looks down on that hobby, the same way furries are disgusted at plushies. Can't we all just get along?

I always thought that LARPing was an outgrowth of the SCA (and it's numerous predecessors/clones that didn't survive). My first exposure to Boffer type LARPs was in early 80's while reading, in WhiteDwarf Magazine, about the 'Live Action RPG's' being played in and about various locations in the U.K. - usually in old castles or other ruins or various empty Victorian warehouses/basements. They used foam weapons and players could sign on as adventurers (for money) or monsters for free. I recall an article, circa '84ish, where one of the writers for White Dwarf spent a day monstering - he spent several hours in a deep basement storeroom smoking fags and playing cards with a group of other 'goblins' waiting for the next group of 'adventurers' to turn up. The fights were typical boffer style and a referee would accompany the 'adventurers' to adjudicate combats. They didn't call in LARPing but they did use the term 'Live Action'. Aaron PS one of the larger, more successful, ones used to held in Cheshire ... the 'castle' was an old Manor House that fallen into disrepair. It has since been bought by a developer and turned into a posh hotel. EDIT: One of many ads at the time: White Dwarf. May 1986. Attachments:
