So, before I go off spouting about my recent work on Fudge, let me ask how many Jackers have an interest in Fudge?
Fudge, of course, being the system which brought one of the first open licenses (if not THE first) to the industry, and one of the first to implement a meta-game currency (the Fudge point, which became a Fate point and, I suspect, strongly influenced the Bennie).

I always have time for a purely theoretical discussion. I also always have time for you, Tim.

I'm also up for entirely theoretical discussions. Since you're not in the APs, I'm guessing theoretical discussion is the same brand of methodone that saw me through years of non-gaming. How are you holding up?
Side note: I was interested in FUDGE but never managed to run it nor, to be completely honest, finish reading the book. It had more to do with the gaming vacuum I was living in at the time than the quality of the rule set.
I was fascinated by the FUDGE dice, so I even went so far as to buy several sets of dice, which have remained entirely decorative. I thought I'd run FUDGE, but didn't. When I backed FATE, I thought I'd finally use them, but ended up only running online games and using Roll20's dice. I even offered the players to use their own dice or the FATE Cards app, to no avail.

I have always looked at FUDGE as a toolkit to make a game, but haven't made one. I would be willing to toss in my 2 coppers to the discussion.

FUDGE is Fate but without Aspects and with a merits and flaws system instead. And if you're looking at the 20th anniversary version, lots of hacking advice.
Honestly for me, the magic of Fate is the Aspect system. That's the special sauce. Without that (i.e. Fudge), it's just a same-old-ey RPG with a really steep bell curve and if I wanted that I could pick up WEG d6 or OVA or Cinematic Unisystem or any number of other systems that do toolkit RPG building.

FUDGE is Fate but without Aspects and with a merits and flaws system instead. <pedant mode> Well, actually, Fate is Fudge with aspects instead of merits and flaws. Fudge came first, Fate was built from Fudge. </pedant mode> There are other differences as well; Fate has an expanded adjective ladder, for instance. But I digress. I'm glad that Fate works for you, but it's not my cup of tea. My point with this thread was to find out if there are enough people here interested in Fudge to justify posting about it. If you're not one of the people interested in Fudge, that's totally cool, we've got a whole forum dedicated to Fate for you to peruse.

Do you want pedants? Because that's how you get pedants.

That's fair Tim! I honestly would be very curious to see what folks do with Fudge, if only because it'll all be portable over to Fate, but I'd certainly be paying attention and contributing.

To be honest... I really really hate Fate. I feel like its a constant game of "Will my GM let me use this word to add to this thing?"
That being said, I know NOTHING of Fudge. I'm always ready to hear about other systems!

Fudge is the only game in the last 20+ years to seriously tempt me away from GURPS. That's about the highest praise I can give it. Really, the only reason I didn't jump ship is because after spending quite a lot of time with Fudge reading, and tweaking, and using it to build my ideal system... I realized I was basically re-building GURPS, so why not just stay with GURPS? "Fudge is the RPG I play in the timeline where GURPS doesn't exist."

To be honest... I really really hate Fate. I feel like its a constant game of "Will my GM let me use this word to add to this thing?" That seems like a table problem rather than a game design problem, but each table favours different games so maybe Fate is just not quite your fun. That being said, I know NOTHING of Fudge. I'm always ready to hear about other systems! Fudge is pre-Aspect Fate, so if everything ELSE about Fate is of interest then Fudge will do just fine for you! Really, the only reason I didn't jump ship is because after spending quite a lot of time with Fudge reading, and tweaking, and using it to build my ideal system... I realized I was basically re-building GURPS, so why not just stay with GURPS? It's funny, I always felt WEG d6 was "GURPS but designed by someone less possessed by Satan's accountant"

I'd be interested in some Fudge un-packing. hehe. Seriously though I love about half of Fate and Hate the other half so I am curious about fudge.

Excellent, it sounds like I have something of an audience. And yes, mook, that is crazy high praise. Ok, here's the premise of what I'm doing. I have been a "Fudge guy" since... 1996 or so? Maybe 1997? It's the system that I am most comfortable running and tweaking, even more so than OSR stuff. When I come up with an idea for a game, it's initially considered in Fudge terms, and then dragged off to another system as the idea develops; this is because while Fudge can be played straight out of the book (especially the 20th Anniversary Edition) it is more a tool-kit and usually requires a great deal of customization on the part of the GM. When I drag a game idea off to another system, it's usually because I just don't have the time to tweak Fudge to what I want, and some other system is "eh, close enough" to work. So! I am creating the "Probie Tim" edition of Fudge. It will be my "standard" build with which I will run Strategicon games, Hangout/Roll20 games, actual plays for Happy Jacks (assuming I ever run one), Jackercon games, home games around a gaming table, etc., etc., etc. Right now I'm putting together the character creation rules; I'm looking at a "high concept", five attributes (health, muscle, smarts, speed, and spirit), fifteen skills (adulting, crafting, fighting, healing, operating, performing, persuading, pilfering, riding, searching, shooting, sneaking, surviving, tracking, and throwing), gifts, faults, and fixed "parry" and "toughness" traits. The "high concept" drives skills and attributes; so for instance, a "collegiate Olympic archery hopeful" could have a high shooting skill, but wouldn't be able to pick up a sniper rifle and peg off a terrorist or two at 300 yards at that same level of skill. Similarly, it would be tough to justify a "wheelchair bound psychic crusader" with high speed and muscle attributes. Once I get a set of gifts and faults I like, I'll put a link here to the character creation rules. Based on my description above, if it's feeling like it's got some Fate and Savage Worlds influences, that's because it does. I was thinking about calling it "Savage AF", meaning either "Savage as Fudge" or "Savage assed Fudge", but I don't think I could get away with that, LOL. More to come. P.S. the "adulting" skill would be, like, a profession skill. So, like, "adulting (doctor)" or "adulting (detective)" or "adulting (McDonalds store manager)" and the like. I'm totally not stuck on the word "adulting", it's really only a place-holder until I find a word which means the same thing and follows the pattern (i.e. ends in -ing). If anyone has ideas, I'm all ears.

If you don't call this Fudge hack 'Ganache', I will be so disappointed.
