To clarify, we're discussing "science fantasy" as opposed to "science fiction" and "space fantasy," yes? Many people argue that Star Trek is "science fiction," whereas Star Wars is "space opera." Would we be splitting these fine hairs even further if we delineate between "space opera" and "science fantasy"? What would demarcate that? My gut feeling is that science fantasy is pulpy sword & sorcery among the stars, the kind of setting where you've got topless amazon warriors wielding laser-spears and riding bipedal lizards - in fact, if "laser" is often used as a prefix, chances are high that we're in science fantasy territory. It's not the best definitions, so a proper demarcation might be based on themes and motifs: Sci-Fa employ larger-than-life characters and plot devices, 'operatic' if you will; whilst Sci-Fi are more interested in exploring a grounded reflection of ourselves as we shape - and are shaped - by our tools and inventions. There HAS to be a large portion of Tvtropes dedicated to this. I'm diving in, wish me luck!
