I finally got the packet legitimately last night (though I did receive a copy from a listener -- and several other offers). I'm saving my angst about the whole process for the show tonight... Ugh...I have to go bed for work right when the show starts...

I don't have work on Saturday, but the show starts close to midnight my time and I still have sewing to get done this weekend... :-(

It was very frustrating that I was able to get the playtest on share links with far greater speed and efficiency than the official one I signed up for and was granted. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but it's another one of those things that reinforces how much I like the product and how little I like the company behind it.
I mean, really, how hard is it to give away a pdf? I'm not a "professional computer guy", but I'm willing to bet whatever authentication process they used to see if you checked the magic box on the form is what strangled the system. It's nice they want to try to follow the example of an open playtest, but they're already doing it in several wrong ways.
Oh, and I love how I'm participating in an "online playtest" where the agreement and FAQ say I'm not supposed to be "playing online". All my 4e stuff worked fine online, and I actually paid for that stuff.

All my 4e stuff worked fine online, and I actually paid for that stuff. I just learned what the "agreement" meant by all players in the game must register. I thought it was to participate in the surveys, but they really mean everyone that comes to my house and plays in the game I run must register and sign the agreement first. lol. Come over Wotc and check eveyone's IDs, but bring your own beer. ;D I swear the design team seem like swell guys but the corporation is insane. I would have preferred a core rules beta version instead of this RPGA packet. Whatever. I'm pretty sure Bruce said we're not allowed to give Wotc any more money back in Season 5.

It's gobs of people trying to download the PDF at the same time. It's going to kill the system. There's no way around that. Ummm... One has nothing to do with the other. And, you're not participating in an online play test, you're participating in an open play test. Right now, in order to minimize the variables, they want everyone playing on the same "field". Playing online messes with the experience and skews the results. So, for now, they don't want people to do that. It could be that later they will remove that restriction, but for now, it makes sense.

And, you're not participating in an online play test, you're participating in an open play test. Since I'm in the mood for nit picking... www.wizards.com/dnd/files/DNDNextPlaytestingAgreement.pdf"...you agree to be bound by the terms of this Online Playtest Agreement (the “OPTA”) as well as Wizards’ Code of Conduct..."

And my point still stands. At this stage of the play test, they want to eliminate as many variables as possible.
And the agreement is a digital one, hence it's use of Online. As opposed to a physical one.

I agree the online playtest agreement refers to the agreement being online, not the playtest.
Regardless. I think it's absurd to expect that people are NOT going to play via skype/hangout or a virtual tabletop.
TheOnlineDM has already admitted that he made all the required macros and monster templates for maptools (granted he did it for an in person game.)

I don't think that they are assuming any such thing. I think that they put it in there to discourage people who might have otherwise just gone and done so.
It's like the shoplifting checks at a store. They aren't there to keep professional shoplifters out. They're there to keep the kids from trying on a whim.

Can people still sign up to get the packet, or did you have to pre-register?

They finally changed the terms so you can playtest online now. I'd bet you can still get the playtest. Poke around here.

Can people still sign up to get the packet, or did you have to pre-register? You should still be able to sign up, I only did so on Friday and got it ok.

I got it. Thanks for the help!
My group is supposed to be trying it out tonight (I'm not running, fortunately!). I'll try to post impressions afterward.
