I was finally reading through my copy of the Beta and planning to to a test game but I was confused by something I read. Specifically this bolded part on page 14 (the boxes are the missing success symbol):
So the characters roll, pick their kept dice, then roll more dice? Also are these additional kept dice limited to your ring score or are they just freebies?

I mean, you could get better, but seems weird to offer a reroll for free.

Here are my notes from rolling:
1. Declaration of Intent 2. Determine Skill, Ring and Target Number of Successes 3. Assemble and Roll Dice Pool a. Assistance 4. Apply Advantages and Disadvantages a. Apply one Advantage for Each Character Assisting 5. Choose Kept Dice (Choose from 1 to the Ring Value of the Approach Used) 6. Resolve Symbols on Dice
Step 6 INCLUDES resolving explosive successes. My reading is that you may elect to keep or drop these additional results, above and beyond what you've already chosen to keep in Step 5.
And that symbol (three circling sperm) counts as a success AND you can roll the die again.

All of this with the caveat that I haven't finished reading the V4.0 beta changes....

My reading and understanding(including checking the beta test forums) is that the explosive success symbols are resolved BEFORE choosing kept dice, all other symbols are resolved after. Because exploding dice could potentially add strife to the roll and they don't want to force folks to keep strife that they didn't know existed before the fact. I think this is one of those instances of oversight in the rules. The resolution of exploding dice happens before choosing kept in the app as well.

And I feel dumb. On my first read through I managed to get successes and explosive successes backward. I bow to your infinite wisdom. So last question, are explosive successes kept regardless of reroll? Like if I my ring score is three, and I roll two successes and an explosive success. I reroll and get one additional success, do I then have 4, or am I limited by my ring score still?

You roll and get success, success with strife, explosive success, success with opportunity, blank. You reroll the explosion and get another explosive success but with strife. You reroll that to just get a strife symbol. So if you keep that die it's worth 2 successes but also gives 2 strife. Now, you can keep success, success with strife, and success with opportunity. Or you could take the explosion instead of one of the above. If you do that though, you have to keep all of the explosion.

Unless there’s been a change I’m not finding, and I looked through the V4.0 update, the beta book says quite explicitly that exploding successes are resolved after kept dice are determined, and the player can choose to use or drop the re-rolls.
If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but I’m not seeing any reference for rerolling BEFORE determining kept dice.

Here's the post from the forums that I was referencing(The part in red is what makes me think that its resolved before keeping):
Now this all being said, I can also see that one could interpret it the other way.

My random two cents, but choosing your dice after the effects are known is pretty well in the history of L5R in general, going back to the playtest where the Scorpion PC deliberately failed a healing spell on the Crab PC
YMMV
