Hello all! I am having some internal (in my head) debate. On how you decide on system for a setting. Some of you may have seen my various posts on which system to use for a supers game. I am also wanting to run a Asian Fantasy setting. I am having a hard time coming up with a system to use for both. Part of the Asian setting is I want to come up with one but feel as though I am better off taking one and changing certain things in it. So how do you decide on which system to use? Is it familiarity or ease of use. Perhaps it's trying something new or even using the rules made for the setting. But what happens when you've come up with a setting?
Some more info: In regards to the Asian setting I'm tempted to just use the L5R rules and world but change things as too how I want it. But I am still brainstorming ideas for it so it might sit on the back burner some more. Though I have thought of using DnD 5E with some adjustments.
Supers side of it, I think part of it is I'm just not ready for the challenge of that type of game. But that's something for another time.

When you say "Asian Fantasy", what do you mean specifically? Do you mean samurai with spells like L5R, something more high-flying Wuxia with magic, maybe something low powered, where the players don't have access to magic, but the world is magical?
How deadly are you looking? One-hit-dead or something pulpier?
I'd generally shy away from L5R more because the schools are so tied to Rokugan that you'd be doing more brain surgery on the game than world building.
Savage Worlds is always a possibility, but I don't know of too many Asian-themed books, outside of a steampunk one that I picked up.
GURPS has a solid Japanese book I believe, but it may be 3e only.
Exalted if you're looking for high-flying Wuxia.

Why are you not ready for the challenge of a Superhero campaign? It's a great campaign to run if you have very reactive players versus proactive ones since heroes tend to respond to what teh villains do, though coming up with a bunch of villains and their motivations is a bunch of work.
I generally go the opposite way. I tend to look at systems and then ask myself what I want to run in it. This is most useful for generic systems like GURPs or Savage Worlds but you can find variety in D20, BRP, and Fate. Not all systems are made equal for all genres though and once I pick a system I usually see what genres work best with it.
I can't comment on asian flavors doing so only in D20 and 4th edition L5R, but for Supers I recommend Savage Worlds if you want that pulpy feel to it, or even Powered by the Apocalypse if your focus isn't on powers so much as a heroes place in the world (I am currently running MASKS:A NEW GENERATION and it reminds me in such a positive way of Astro City, which is one of my favorite Superhero Comics of all time).
There is also the old Marvel FASERIP system. I see they have an updated version (called FASERIP) for free on drivethrurpg. You can also find Classic Marvel Forever that has the old stuff on it. It's old. It's wonky. It is so much fun and you can come up with basically anything. I ran a campaign in that just 2 years ago.
In other words, there is stuff out there to runa superhero campaign depending on what you are going for. Hell, most styles are covered just in the Savage Worlds superpowers book (from Street Level to Cosmic).

zaszamonde: I am kind of thinking along the lines of L5R but more actiony. So some times there is court drama but mostly travelling around battling demons and the like. I am looking for something more pulpy. Yeah I think you're right with L5R unless your using it for L5R it's best not to use it. I do have the Iron Dynasty one for Savage Worlds. Is that the one you mean? Or the Steamscape Asia one? I have seen the GURPS book around I just need to find a copy lol. Not too sure about Exalted. I think it might be too high flying for me.
akadiar: I have not seen that but looking at it looks as though it might be worth picking up thanks. I do have one of their PDFs on China and Mongolia (I think).
ericfromnj: I am still pretty new to Game Mastering though you don't learn if you don't do lol. I think my group is reactive so that might be good then. I like your point on picking system, makes sense. As for Savage Worlds I have been looking at picking up the Supers Companion. I just recently bought on Comixology the first Astro City graphic novel. Still have to read it lol. I am not totally sold on the old Marvel system but perhaps another look is needed. I'm thinking I'm going to need that Superpowers Companion now lol.
