I already splurged on Twitter about how much I enjoyed this first session, but since there's no thread for the first installment, I'll echo my sentiments from there: This was a fantastic session. The characters are interesting, play off of each other wonderfully, and the added ability to see Kimi, Stork and Dave all together interacting makes it even better. Stork's random practice with his shamisen (that guitar thing according to wiki) and Kimi's attempts to plug her ear was awesome in a way that just wasn't possible without video!
The 'trial' of sorts where the three had to confess their 'sins' was really fun to listen to and I was actually afraid Makiko might not be able to enter at all. Seeing Ichiro have to confess *twice* was amusing and a great piece of character development at once. Stork was my favorite player during the Vampire game, and I was kind of expecting Kazuki to be similar. Nope! He really is a completely different character, and Stork really does seem to enjoy playing him, which just makes the whole game even more fun! And Stu is a consistently amazing GM who's games I never tire of listening to. Also, I really get a kick out his 'Makiko's ghost dad' voice. "YOU ARE WRONG. I AM YOUR FATHER." was great~
So yeah, fangaling mode off. Great to see another L5R game, great to see the old crew together in Rokugan again. Thanks very much for it!

I love the interplay between the characters. At the confessing of sins now which harkens back to that one npc who did it all night from the first L5R AP. So far so good with this one!

I'm about 1/2 through and loving it so far. I really like the dynamic with Stork's mute and how Kimi is playing not knowing what (or even if) he's "talking" and talking over him, or saying what he's saying at the same time. Should be some very entertaining interactions in the future. Kimi: you mentioned that they'd hear you talk to "yourself" (your father), and even had a discussion with him on the road. Since these characters have spent some time together, what have you told them of your haunting? Do they know? Does your father ever do anything that affects the physical world where they may have seen it? I suppose it's also up to stork and cadave to choose what their characters think (or believe) is going on.

Good first session. It was nice to get caught up on how the valley has progressed, how the new threats are playing out, and the hilarity that will ensue when the characters are sent on a diplomatic style mission sans courtier. It seems that the PCs will never learn to fill that niche.

I have to say... I'm super excited to see how a Crab and a Mute will deal with a winter court!

Just finished the episode and I have to say that right now I don't feel like the mute aspect is working but I'm waiting to see how it goes once they start encountering more NPC's.
Otherwise interesting start, I was dubious about the way they were immediately handed a big important mission but I liked the fact that as players they played up the 'we are disposable assets that nobody would believe' side of things.

There’s so much that you can’t do.

As Ayslyn said it's a really difficult one to roleplay, further complicated by the fact that it's being recorded. Only having listened to the podcast I have no idea if you're making gestures / pseudo signing when you talk to Dave.
I think that once you get further into the game it'll become more of a complication. You might get separated or placed into a situation where you can't sign such as combat or scenes at night (the latter might even allow for some sort of comprehension roll to prevent Dave misunderstanding what you have signed).
Final thing that comes to mind would be teaching Kimi's character basic signing, not enough to understand when you're talking to Dave but enough to try (and possibly fail) to get meaning across.
For example say you have a situation where a daiymo is angry with somebody and wants to see one of you about it you can accurately tell Dave that but if Kimi is the only one about you might be stuck saying: Lord. Angry. You. Go. which could be easily misinterpreted.
Don't know if any of that would help, it really is a difficult disadvantage to play and is made doubly so by the fact you're doing it as an AP.

Fantastic session. The 4 participants have great chemistry.
I was worried about Stork playing a mute character until it became clear that he would still be able to talk …a lot… but require interpretation by CADave, which was freaking hilarious at times. The protector as a kind of nanny is an interesting concept.
Also, great that Kimi can ignore Stork's character without being rude...
As someone who knows Japan well, I really appreciate that HJRPG Rokugon is not historical Japan, so the GM and players are free to develop this alternate world as they choose. This is way more interesting than trying to be historically and culturally "accurate".
So when is Tyler coming back?

Do you have some suggestions I can try to make it work better, other than being silent all the time? I mentioned this in the Session 0 thread, but I'm a fan of the idea of you sitting next to Dave and when you're character is going to say something to his, you lean in and say it sotto voce. The mics will pick you up so we can all hear it, but Kimi (and Stu) won't be able to hear it. Dave can then pass along whatever his character decides to. Listeners get to be on on all ideas, but role play becomes important as Dave is basically your translator. If there's something you want to communicate directly to someone, you can do it with an actual chalkboard, or pantomime, or however you do it in the room without talking. Obviously if you're speaking OOC, hold up your hand or something to indicate OOC and yammer away.
