Since this campaign could involve clans and families form all across Rokugan, would it be helpful to have a sort of cheat sheet for them all? I've started work on one, let me know what you think and if it'd be helpful. Let me know if there's more info you'd like to see.

A very useful resource. I would question the Yasuki, however. The Yasuki were/are traditionally a Crab family. They broke away hundreds of years ago from the Crane, and only rejoined the Crab relatively recently (Four Winds era) because of doctored/forged papers showing Daidoji Hachi, a lowly gunso in the Crane armies, was the actual rightful heir to the Yasuki house. The hair bleaching, as for Cranes, goes back to honor their original Thunder. The person who went into the Shadowlands to recover the Thunder's daisho had their hair permanently whitened by the experience, so Crane bleach it white to show respect.
YMMV

YMMV Good point, but I wanted it to be very short and succinct. So if Stu needs a quick samurai, he can spin through this and pic a family or the players could use it as an easy guide when running into a new samurai. The reason behind the physical description is somewhat immaterial since they'll just see the outcome, not the route. If Stu needed a deep character, he'd probably do a bit more research. Think a bird watching book, but for the Great Clans. Specifically with the Yasuki, knowing they came from Crane sets them apart from the rest of the Crab clan, enough so that you can glean simple mannerisms. From outside the clan, they probably look nothing like Crane anymore, save for the hair, but it's still key to understanding them. I had debated including significant events as well, which would cover the Yasuki Wars, but I decided against it for brevity's sake.

Here is a link to what I have so far, just the first three Clans. drive.google.com/open?id=1xNFTlGpw5q2mS8ApcRl7oSzQfpCTNgAjI'd like some feedback on the presentation format for readability and for the general accuracy of the data and pronunciations. Let me know if I'm way off base with anything. Thanks!

It would be good if you put the actual clan name at the top of each table. The only reason I know the last group are Dragon is because of Akavidar's comment.

If it were me, I would include ALL major families from all timelines(like adding Agasha in with the Dragon, for example and the Hitomi maybe just so that its all there for completeness' sake) In addition to families, I think it might be handy to include any "notable" weirdos from the clan. Stuff like the Kuni Witch Hunters. The Moto "Lost". Akodo Deathseekers. Etc. To be fair, I think the only time vassal families were really even dealt with at all was 2nd Edition with the Secrets of... books. I liked the IDEA of vassal families, but mechanically I felt that it was just something that was NOT needed at all.

I too think vassal families are a pretty good concept, and agree that, barring any specific need... they address that in one of the books. Outside the clan, a vassal of the Asahina are referred to as Asahina. It's within the clan that it matters if they are Asahina or Inukai, for example. Or, to go very very far back, the story of the Horiuchi family of the Unicorn (which of course sprung from a text booboo on a card )

Working on some updates from your feedback and adding more clans. I'm a bit hesitant with some of the families since I haven't had the opportunity to RP with them to get an understanding. Let me know what you think and if I'm way off-base with the Lion Clan.

It looks nice, but I don't know enough about Lion to comment on content.

Stu Venable, have you ever said what the Inukai Mon looks like. I don't remember.

And now the Mantis! I'll publish them all in a PDF when I'm done.

Working on some updates from your feedback and adding more clans. I'm a bit hesitant with some of the families since I haven't had the opportunity to RP with them to get an understanding. Let me know what you think and if I'm way off-base with the Lion Clan. The Akodo(lion in general really) are anything but pious. In fact, there is a parable that there is a copy of Shinsei's Tao in every Lion dojo because of Imperial decree, but that none of them have ever been opened. I'd be happier to see mention of their tactical superiority. Akodo is MY family. I have aligned myself with Lion, Akodo specifically, when there was only one Akodo in the entire game. The Akodo, to me, are the embodiment of the true Samurai. Every clan has a strong bushido tenet and a weak one. The Lion's strength is honor and their weakness is compassion. I don't think that the Akodo have that weakness. I think its the Matsu that garner the clan that stereotype. I also wouldn't call them quiet. *** Akodo are soldiers, typical clan leaders, and they strive perfection. They are the Mind of the clan. They are known to be calm, patient, and tactical in everything. Ikoma are loud, blustering, and braggarts. They are the Heart of the clan. Where a samurai is expected to never show emotion, the Ikoma are almost expected to do so. They are storytellers and historians who imbue their stories with the love and tragedy that one would expect from a samurai story. Kitsu are quiet, studious, respectful. They are the Soul of the clan. The Lion clan revere their ancestors more than most clans do, and the Kitsu(due in large part to their interesting ancestry) have the ability to speak to those ancestors. So the Kitsu are the link to the clan's past. They are also traditionally the shugenja family for the clan. They are mysterious because of their link to the Kitsu race of old and as such can sometimes have leonine features. Matsu are brash, quick to action, and brutal. They are the Fist of the clan. The gross majority of the huge Lion armies are made up of Matsu soldiers. One could call the Matsu blood thirsty, and many do, but in actuality they are just quick to take offense and settle those offenses with finality. They are also one of the matriarchal families in Rokugan, preferring female leadership over male. They also house one of the scariest battle groups, the Lion's Pride. A group of all female Matsu warriors that are frightening to behold in battle.
