Also will have to write back with a description of my “Hare’s Crossing” setting. I get the feeling that there’s a few HJ regulars who would be interested in the world I’ve been making.

Still listening, but yes, Jane McGonigal is great. She was keynote speaker at a conference I went to a couple years ago and was excellent. She's got a book or two out there as well. One of my groups suffers from the stork and Kimi disease for dice rolling. The record so far is 16 1's rolled in an evening (11 from the party, 5 from the GM); and that's just a 3 hr session (this session did have a couple combats, so there was a lot of rolling). The failures have become an expected extra party member for our games.

One of my personal gaming stories with people Storking their dice rolls:
We were playing L5R and a couple sessions in, we realized my friend Rob was taking dice away from his pool after he'd roll. We asked him WTF he was doing. "I was cancelling out my tens with my ones."
God. He was playing by Vampire rules. Three sessions in of doing that, and he was still smashing the crap out of stuff as a Crab.

Isn't adding hitpoints on the fly to a big bad guy that's getting tooled just the same as fudging dice!?
*runs out of the room before that grenade explodes*

Isn't adding hitpoints on the fly to a big bad guy that's getting tooled just the same as fudging dice!? *runs out of the room before that grenade explodes* ;D Listen. I had this argument on the DMAcademy subreddit and shit did not go well. Apparently a lot of DMs think it's totally fine to bump or reduce enemy HP in order to favor someone at the the table "who isn't having a good night" and I'm taking crazy pills because I'm apparently ruling in a manner "that isn't conducive to producing a good time for the players." And also, apparently, rewarding failed rolls with additional strategic information to the player "not having a good time" is taking away player Agency. I looooooooooooooooooooooooathe this sentiment that newer DMs seem to be propping up. This isn't a grenade, it's an ICBM of hate from me. In other new, MOAR MAC!

Because there is nothing wrong with it. The problem is that there is equally nothing wrong with not doing it. It depends on the group. My group loves that I adjust things on the fly to make the story more interesting for everyone. Your group may prefer a much more structured, by the book approach. Both are fine. Arguing that either in empirically wrong is just silly..... and wrong in itself.

Yeah, I'm tempted to not-respond, but it's in my blood: this is an ongoing discussion where a few 'jackers are very much by-the-book, rules-as-written, and sometimes, well-it's-what-i-had-planned-i-can't-be-blamed-for-the-TPK. The best thing to do is for the majority to wait silently for those GMs' indignation to wash over them and recede again. And to those 'jackers: FNORD.

Like I said, the only real problem is that certain people refuse to accept that some people have fun differently than they do. If your group prefers running things by the book, rolls in the open, everything set in stone, then that's how you play. It's your fun. If my group prefers a looser, more fluid approach, where they trust me to adjudicate what may or may not be more or less fun for them, and adapt things on the fly, then that's how we play. It's our fun. Neither of us is wrong, and we're both right. It's entirely about having fun. The only wrong thing is to insist that those that prefer a different style conform to your idea of fun.

The entire "I'm no mere Hedge-mage" situation wouldn't have happened if Stu added hit points to his bad guy...

The entire "I'm no mere Hedge-mage" situation wouldn't have happened if Stu added hit points to his bad guy... Yeah, but he decided not to in that moment, and so the no-mere-hedge-mage moment happened. Other times, GMs like Stu and I will add hit points, if it looks like the players will appreciate the win more that way. It's up to the GM. In each moment. To know their group and what would make it a more rich experience for them. I like you, dude, but neither of us is EVER going to convince the other one. I SAID "GOOD DAY," SIR. GOOD DAY!
