I've been thinking about other forms of media helping new players understand the general setting and feel of an L5R game and have come up with a few of my favorites and when they're most applicable: - Usagi Yojimo - Comic - Covers the saga of the Rabbit Ronin, Usagi and his travels around Japan in his warrior's quest. It details many aspects of the culture including samurai, ronin, priests, magic, court life, and war. Highly recommend
- Zatoichi - Movie - A long series of movies about the blind masseur, all of which are a load of fun. Though this usually takes place in very low levels of society, it's great to understand the peasant and how cities feel. The original series had 26 films, all with the same actor, giving it a great sense of continuity and the 2003 film by Beat Takeshi just can't be missed.
- Shogun - Miniseries - Shogun tells the tale of a beached English ship pilot and his reactions of and integration into Japanese society. Interestingly, the Japanese spoken isn't translated to the viewer, lending it an air of learning as you perceive situations the same as the pilot. Great for newcomers as they can learn the little aspects of Japanese society as the pilot does including what it means to be samurai and proper behavior.
What are you favorite pieces of media that put you in the L5R mood? I don't have much for Chinese or Korean and I feel there has to be some great media covering the Khans for the Unicorn Clan.

So while the movie is pretty bad overall I think the second half of the Keanu Reeves version of 47 Ronin is a good L5R movie with how it blends in the supernatural elements.

Oof, that's like watching Great Wall so you can understand the Crab. It might be worth it, but getting there will be rough.
I should probably also mention all Kurosawa samurai movies, but that's almost a given.

In Anime, Samurai Champloo is pretty good.
Princess Mononoke is ok.

I am so amazed you didn't mention THE movie. The one that literally inspired the game. Seven Samurai. I always challenge folks to watch it and determine which of the seven inspired which great clan. Great prep material.

Great prep material. Ha! I tried to correct that in a later comment, but yeah, I missed the most important media: Kurosawa Films. I honestly just wrote the post to mention Usagi Yojimo, which stork would love.

I also recommend both 13 Assassins - which gave me the great quote "TOTAL MASSACRE" - as well as Inspector Dee.

I haven't so I was wondering how they compared to the comic.

Usagi Yojimbo is awesome, have you ever read the Usagi Space series? Some of it! It's a bit harder to chase down these days compared to regular Usagi Yojimbo. It's not too bad, but I prefer my straight samurai drama instead.

As you mentioned... Shogun! One of my favorite mini/mega series of all time. Not to mention to book is epic as well. All win.
