Yeah it's a really interesting thread regard the city and what people would consider to be both realistic and appropriate for a setting. I've not done much city design for games before but it does make me think that if I ever do it would be fun to do it step by step through different ages, start at a small settlement and then build it up one period at a time. That way you get the layers to it and could end up with the 'why on earth would that be there' result

I like the idea of starting with a small settlement and building it out/over/on top of. You look at things people might not know about modern cities that have been built over - like Underground Atlanta or Lower Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago... It makes sense for a fantasy city to have levels built on top of ruins or unused areas, I think.
